Default First effective convey encounter. What did I do wrong?

I ran into my first real convey encounter tonight. It was my second overall. The first one I ran into when I only had a single torpedo left over so I really only got to enjoy the view and took out a C2 with a lucky hit.

Anyway, tonight I looked through the pile and found a passenger liner (my first sighting of one) and I couldn't wait to see what 24,000 tons looked like along with the other 6 ships and 3 planes I took down during the patrol. However, after endless maneuvering and close brushes with all the destroyers, I sent 3 torpedos into the liner (actually aimed two there and a third meant for the T3 next to it, hit it instead). The damned thing refused to go down along with a C2 I hit during the same salvo. I followed the convey forever it seemed and got another shot and finally hit the liner with a 4th shot just before darkness set in (my aft torpedo lined up nicely with a small merchant on the way in so I took that too).

Anyway, the liner went down and I was ecstatic. I then returned to Brest and prepared for the fanfare. End result, junk. I got something like 800 renown and clearly the liner never showed up. I then thought, oh, it's not a warship or a merchant ship. Do liners not count towards renown????
