IIRC from what I readed in books about WW1 some time ago, the real objective of the towed hook was to try to desestabilize the submarine by lifting a part of it. That could be enough to make it lose trim and plunge to the bottom uncontrolled. Apparently this effect was caused also by close placed depth charges: If a part of the boat was lifted abruptly, it lost trim and went down.
