Default Log of U 48

This thread will be of the adventures of U 48 until it goes to the DID thread. This career is being played in GWX 3.0 using the SH3 Commander settings pictured below. Realism is 100%. I have external camera on but only use to take screens of deck gun firing.

The log below is for the 2nd Patrol which was the first patrol of the war for U 48.

Note the big contribution to the war effort with the sinking of 1827 tons of Coffee

On Sept 7th the U 48 spotted a convoy at 0918 in sector AM52. Proceeded to get in an ambush point of what appeared to be the outer row of the convoy. Later it was discovered that we were actually in the middle of the convoy of at least 6 rows of ships. The merchants nearby were in the 4 to 5 ton range. As we were near two of the lead escorts, a Hunt DD and the light cruiser HMS Birmingham. I decided it would be best to launch the attack as soon as possible in order not to lose the element of surprise. As the HMS Birmingham was the largest Tonnage target available I set tube 1 at a depth 5.6m (.2m below the keel of the Crusier) hoping for a 1 kill shot with the magnetic setting. Tubes 2,3 and 4 were set to run at 3.5 for impact.
Range was 500 m at 90 AOB portside. The torpedo set at 5.6m went under the Crusier and did not detonate. It later hit a merchant further away. The torpedoes fired from tubes 2 and 3 hit solidly below the command and midway between center and stern. However the ship did not appear to be hurt. Fired a 4th torpedo at 3.5m from AOB of 135 which was a dud. It hit near same place as previous hit but did not explode. I knew the remaining destroyers would be closing and wanted to be sure to finish the Cruiser so dove to 20m, went under the cruiser and fired stern torp from 450 meters. It hit with great effect causing secondary explosions.

Crash dove to 60 meters and while evading depth charges the Cruiser came careening past on its way to the bottom with props still turning. We were only in 90m of water and the sea was calm. Worked our way towards deeper water and once we got to a depth of 102m the escorts headed back to the convoy. The escorts dropped DC's for at least 2 and 1/2 hours. I came to periscope depth at one point to see three DD's circling. I fired two torpedoes but recorded no hits.

Pic below shows the damage taken from a bomber in sector AN13.
