Default Question for our German speaking members.

I was watching Saving Private Ryan..again...a few weeks back...great movie imo...anyways...I always have wondered what the hell that German soldier is telling that American soldier as he is shoving the bayonet into him....because I know If I was the American I would have been saying the excact same thing as he was....saying..."wait wait wait...what the hell are you saying"...lol...intense part just always wondered what he was saying because it comes across to me as if he was saying...relax it will be over soon... .

He's saying, "Just think! In a couple years I'll be making BWMs to sell to the husband of your widow."

From what I can tell it is to take it easy and let it happen or something like that. It's been awhile since I've seen it and my German is not so good.

He tries to talk him into giving up and accepting death, that it will be over soon and everything would be easier for him if he just lets it happen. Sounds idiotic when translating it like this, but it does not in the context of the German scene. Very troublesome scene. Well, there are plenty of troublesome scenes.

Good movie, I've seen many people in the cinema putting their beers and candies aside, even some women leaving the room in tears. That'S what anti-war movies must try to acchieve: making people either think and reflect (Thin Red Line) or making them feel most uncomfortable and worried (Saving Private Ryan). If you find an antiwar movie just exciting and entertaining, it is an normal action movie indeed. Most "anti-war" movies are indeed.

I think that Spielberg did even better when doping Band of brothers in the same style. i like the series even better, since it is not less disillusionising, but more neutral on the pathos-front. the ending of Private Ryan - was Hollywood style again.

Nevertheless a good movie, all in all. Only "Band of Brothers" and "Thin Red Line" I like better, in this department.

Thanks for the translation. Always wondered what he was saying. Now the scene is even more horrifying that I know what he's saying.

Wow, they sell beer in the cinema in Germany! The closest thing here is a place called Cinema Grill, where you watch a film, and have dinner, and they actually have a liquer license. So you can enjoy a film, dinner and glass of wine or two with your meal. But I wouldn't recommend indulging while watching any of these films unless one wants to get sick.
