the points you earn for sinking ship is called "renown" - renown is used for "buying" upgrades to your sub, getting new weapons, medals, promotions and officers etc

If you sink a neutral ship, renown will be deducted from your total for the value of the sunken ship.

these renown values vary depending on what mods your using if any.

my advice... leave neutrals well enough alone.

Thanks for that. I'm glad I did leave them alone then.

In GWX you won't loose renown for sinking neutral shipping, but you won't get any either. Sinking neutral shipping also means if you bump into any other shipping from that country in the next 24 hours it will treat you as an enemy, and sink you if armed.

Watch out as some convoys to have neutral ships in them. Even if they're breeching the law about neutals sailing with enemy escorts, you don't get any renown. Always check the flag before sinking. I almost sunk a American large freighter this morning, glad I checked!

I think sinking of lonely neutral ships is obviously a sin but if some neutrals are sailing in group with enemy ships around they're just risking their asses No wonder they were hit accidently and sunk.

Is that true? I changed mine to '0' for just that reason, so of course I can't check, but I don't think GWX does that.

I think the point Sailor Steve has made regarding neutrals and renown in GWX is correct. Having said that, I'll take this opportunity to raise an issue connected with sinking neutrals that didn't get a reply in another thread that I posted in sometime ago. A few patrols back I sunk by mistake a ship owned by the USA prior to their entry into WWII. If the statement made by bookworm is correct, and others have said this as well, if I encounter any ships/planes of the USA they will attack me for at least 24 hours after I committed the crime. Well in my case the Irish also took a dislike to me as I was attacked by Irish Hurricane's on two different occassions soon after sinking the US ship. Because of this, I'm wondering if you become an enemy of all neutral nations for 24 hours. Can anyone clarify?

I think if u sink neutral u will become an enemy of the world. Remember the Konigsberg target ships. When u strike them, u're becoming an enemy even of your own nation :p

Is it possible that you sank the American ship within Irish territorial waters? I have no idea as to whether SH III models a country's territorial waters or not; just throwing that out for consideration.

I leave neutral vessels alone. If there's any doubt in my mind regarding a ship's nationality I let it pass unharmed. Sinking one (even accidently) just wastes a torpedo that might be desperately needed later on.

One other question: will neutral aircraft or ships pass on information about your location to the enemy if they spot you? During early war periods ('39-'41) I treat all US vessels as potential spies for the British. I won't attack them but will dive as they're spotted to avoid detection. Same goes for Irish aircraft & ships.

May I please add to the questioning...recently spotted in the Straits of Gibraltar just north of Casablanca - a big fat heavy Japanese ore carrier. Only problem, it's October 1940.

The Japanese aren't even listed as neutral or otherwise in that period.
