Default How did you die this time?

For those of us who play DID, I want to take a survey on the method of death experienced by skippers playing SH3/GWX. Feel free to add your comments.

P.S. I am also very curious to find out how big the disparity between SH3/GWX and real life as to the cause of uboat losts.

So far with my current carrear I havent been killed.

But my last carear had a suddent end.

I was under attack, Three distroyers had me cornered in s bad situation, They had dropped DCs all around me and my hull was leaking. As my boat rested on the shallow bottom, the flooding increased but the front of my boat was almost at the surface. Then two DCs landed in the right place to do inreparabel to my stern torpedo room. Finaly the bow of my boat was rammed and I was now completely on the bottom, Now a sitting duck, I couldnt Blow ballast to surface,I was stuck. A distroyer went over me and hit me with three DCs and that was the end to that boat.

Usually depth charge by destroyer.

The hardest part I find is to get into attack position without being detected, if I can do that I'm pretty safe.

I thought Id tell the reason I didnt get out of this one. I was in Shallow water where I could barley go 30m. If I could have gone deep I would have been fine.

my most recent one - couple of months ago - trying to get out of a convoy.

i was around 270 meters and took some hedge hogs which caused flooding.

worked on the damage, but the depth charges caused more damage moments later.

because of the additional damage, 270 meters was too much and i experienced implosion due to sea pressure

I was patrolling the northern entrance of the Hebrides in 45 and was discovered by a lone destroyer at night. I probably forgot to lower my snorkel. She got me with the hedgehogs. Before I go down, I sunk her as well. Misery loves company...

I've just been reading 'Atlantic Escorts' by David K Brown and there is some fascinating information that has changed some of my views of the U-boat war. For example, in the early part of the war the most effective method of killing a U-boat was ramming as the pressure hull of a U-boat was resistant to most surface guns (given its curvature and strength) and the guns were also wildly inaccurate in most forms of weather. The most effective method of surviving early war attacks was to fight it out on the surface as the guns carried on most escorts could not traverse as quickly as the U-boat could turn, and U-boats had a speed advantage (try that in SH3!!!).

Causes of U-boat sinkings to May 1940:
Surface Vessels 13.5 (the 0.5 indicates a shared kill)
Aircraft 2.5
Submarine 3
Mines 4
Accidents/Unknown 1 (some of these could be attributed to mines)
Total 24

Causes of U-boat sinkings Jun 1940 to Mar 1941:
Surface Vessels 8.5
Aircraft 0.5
Submarine 1
Mines 1
Accident/Unknown 4

Causes of U-boat sinkings Apr to Dec 1941
Surface 21
A/c 4
Sub 2
Mines 0
U/k 3

Jan to Jun 1942:
Surface 17.5
A/c 10.5
Sub 1
Mine 1
U/k 2

Aug 1942 to May 1943:
Surface 53
A/c 8
Sub 5
Mine 4
U/k 8

Jun to Sep 1943:
Surface 16.5
A/c 64.5
Sub 2
Mine 1
U/k 5

Oct 1943 to May 1944:
Surface 59.5
A/c 83.5
Sub 3
Mine 3
U/k 13

May 1944 to end of war:
Surface 85.5
A/c 163.5
Sub 8
Mine 20
U/k 41

There are also some interesing stats on type of escort. Whilst these can not be taken in isolation (for example, there were many more Flower Class than Castle Class) it gives an idea of the contribution of each class of ship to the destruction of U-boats in the North Atlantic.

U-boat sinkings by class of ship in the North Atlantic:
Destroyers
Modern 9
Inter war 39
Older (WW1) 26
Town 8
Hunt 8
Sloops
Black Swan 28
Older 12
Frigates
River 22
Loch 12
Captain 28
Colony 5
Corvettes
Flower 38
Castle 5

January 1945- sunk while snorkeling at night with XXIII. Receiver did not detected the airplane until it was 1500 metres far. Then i saw bombs falling into water and got heavy damage on my aft ( the boat was thrown on surface from 20 metres... ). Then it sunk again, in 90 metres i ve emptied my ballast tanks and surfaced for the last time.... 14 men crew was not able to stop the flooding...

He....not the usual one I'm afraid

To make a long story short: My wife opens the door and yells: "Little John (My youngest son) is cryinga nd whining, he doesn't want to sleep, I'm sick of this I'm done and I don't stand this rubbish anymore"

I go to to little John's room, calm him, read him a tale and leave him sleeping.

When I return to Sh3, a fu***g Sunderland has DCed my sub to death in the Bay of Biscay and my crew has died. I guess my crew is in Valhalla talkings pests about little John

For me, it was trying to get to a northbound convoy in grid BE in May 1944. Once the escorts detected me, I couldn't shake them. Eventually the depth charges did us in.
