Default Questions on DVD formats/standards

I am replacing the DVD-player in my PC against a DVD burner. the thing should be capable to dal with these media:

CD, CD-R, CD-RW anyway, no questions.

Lioghtscribe means "printing" a label on the disk via laser, and you need special DVDs for that, okay.

DVD+RW 20-8-16
DVD-RW 20-6
DVD+R DL 10
DVD-R DL 10
DVDRAM 12

Now, R stands for Read and W stands for Write. RW means a DVD that can be repeatedly burned, like CD-RW.

But what does the + and - mean? What media do I need, what is the purpose of these different "standards" (if that is what they are)? And DVDRAM I never heared of.

And three numbers (20-8-16): first means speed of reading, second speed of writing, but third number?

What'S more, if I want to burn a DVD that I can put into a standard TV-DVD player as if it were a movie disc, what kind of DVD and what data format do I chose?

It seems I live a bit behind the times.

Also, I just could try, but I also culd ask: it is for IDE, and I am also confused about that Master and Slave. I have one HD installed, plus currently a DVD player and a CD player/burner. Do I need to set the jumper to slave, assuming the HD is the oM;aster and there can only be one Master? Or is the DVD burner also Master, and the CD becomes Slave?

Good opportunity to learn these things now - before i build a new system in some far away future - and then put it together all myself for the first time ever. so far I only did partial replacements of components.

Don't worry about the - +dvd thing, nowadays the the drives dead-em and burn em without any problem, if you want to know more about that issue, here:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/The-...ckgrounds.html About DVD-RAM, it's intent was to be a temporary boost to the systems RAM memory, it never really caught on, nobody ever uses it... About the 3 speeds, one must be the erasing speed, though then the rw- should display it has well, so...
As for the maste/slave, You can have two masters, just not both on the sam IDE cable, maintain your HD as master, and put the two optic drives on the other cable, should be ok.
The issue about playing on a regular home dvd player, it will depend on the dvd player characteristics, but if your talking about regular dvd format, just use any mainstream burn program, almost everyone has a "burn dvd Film" option, its pretty much automatic from there

One thing you need to remember - error checking is better on the + standard. On top of that, you can change the book type on the + type which you cannot do on the - type. So you can change the book type to say DVD-ROM instead of DVD+R which enhances its compatibility with older players or for other purposes which I will not mention here.

DVD-R however has better 'native' compatibility with older players, but this is offset with +R's ability to change book type making +R the superior format in more ways than one. Error checking alone should make you only want the +R version.
