One more thing:
I don't know how it is in England, but usually "aviation" and "media" do not mix.
They usually have no clue what they are talking about and the stories are usually pretty full of inaccurate information.

It is kind of scary. You see a subject in the media that you know a lot about and you see how badly they muck it up and you wonder how badly they're mucking up subjects you know nothing about.
Just wanted to add an Amen. As Pilot, I agree with these statements %100.

At least your not flying Qantas, there planes have a hard enough time getting off the ground at the moment!

Qantas has had some bad press lately but they still have the best safety record in the world. I wouldn't worry too much.

Just kidding! I've been doing it for 20 years and have never regretted it although, I don't think I'd ever receommend it as a career choice to my son-graveyard shifts, little pay for amount of responsibility that you carry, bad environmental working conditions at times, etc.
I think you need to have quite the love of aviation, aircraft, and working with your hands to enjoy it.

I don't know how the aviation industry is in New Zealand compared to here in the U.S. Things might be a lot better down there.
I wish you well in your endeavor, you're in for a fun ride at times with a few mundane times thrown in at times as well.

Good luck.
