Help! Can't seem to patch SH3 to 1.4b (Vista)

I've logged on as the main (full) Administrator, applied Starforce patches, removed them, removed SH3 (deleted all remaining directories and registry files), re-installed it... ALL DAY. But every time I apply the DVD (Europe) 1.4b patch it appears to install successfully but then the "1.4" doesn't appear when running the game.

Naturally, GWX2.0 is highly unimpressed with this and refuses to install because, it tells me, I'm still running SH3 1.1.

Any ideas? I've used the magic 'Search' button and found various threads of advice, but most of them assume patch 1.4b installs with no problem.

Umm, maybe try reading the sticky thread called 'Windows Vista: Installing SH3 and Patching 1.4b' at the top of this forum?

That was the first thing I did, but I hit a problem at stages one and two:

1. Install Sh3 and play once.
2. Download starforce update tool.

It wouldn't let me run SH3 once without installing the Starforce update.

If someone could move this thread to join the sticky debate I'd be most obliged.

[STILL can't apply patch. Tried 'run as Administrator', running it from Main Administrator account, everything. Using the patch 1.4b from the offical Ubisoft site. Running out of ideas.

right click on the file and select "run as administrator"

being logged in as the admin is not enough, you must right click and select this option.

Forgot to mention that I tried that as well... from the main Administrator account too. I ran both the patch and then the game launch file like that.

Really don't know what's left to try.

purchase the already patched sh3 v1.4 game online without SF - its just around $15 or €10 - no more hassle to get it running

I do believe that be the solution. I'm more than happy to spend more money on this legendary game.
