Default FPS vs Ram memory

i Replaced my 6600gt card with a ati 2600 xt and the difference is very little in frames per second, about the same in the Navigation training mission,
in the convoy ambush only 3 more frames and a bit more estable, but i expected more difference between the old and new card, only seems to be more estable, but not in the fps indicator.

It´s a 2400+ with 1 Gb of ram.

someone know if installing more memory can help to improve my frames rate?? :hmm:
i think that more Ram memory help to reduce load times and stutter, and the graphic card in the frames rate..:hmm: but i´m not sure.

The next i want to check bios parameters of the motherboard , like ram speed and others but i don´t expect a noticeable difference in performance ...

I have a fairly old rig but is adaquate for SHIV.

-2.0 GHz processor
-2.0 gigs of ram
Nvidia 7400 with 256

A month ago, I upgraded ram from 1 gig. I noticed that loading and exiting programs was much faster. Everything felt smoother

As far as video. FPS for SHIV changed only slightly (1 to 5) . The machine seemed to handle explosions and smoke better. All in all there were a lot of little differences in video.

FPS for SHIII changed substantially (about 15-20). Very impressed!
Panning around was as smooth as silk (sometimes).

The only problem I really have had is increased cutting or screen juttering. That's why I say sometimes. The cutting is fixed by video sync so no problem.

I would recomend that you upgrade to 2 gigs. That way you get the dual channel effect. I don't know if you're running XP, but it doesn't recognize ram over ~3.2 gigs. I'm not sure about that effect in Vista.

Desktop memory is cheaper than laptop memory.
I was able to get 2 1gig sticks of laptop memory(kingston) for about 65 dollars(frys). Look around for the best price.

Perhaps you have a bottleneck on the motherboard. What is the FSB speed. My board is clipped at a miserable 400 Mhz. This is a nasty bottleneck. I'm running a 7800OC and 2 gig RAM with 3200+ running at 2.2

I've never looked into FSB before. I've run CPU-z and I'm sure my system needs optimizing. I'll look into it further on the net. Thank you for pointing this out!

Processor is Core 2 Duo T7200

CPU PAGE
Bus speed is at 166.3 MHz
Rated FSB is 665.0 MHz

MEMORY PAGE
DRAM Frequency = 332.5 MHz
FSB/DRAM = 1:2

In addition to the points already made, remember that lots of little things matter to the fps rates in SH4. Disabling the event camera and volumetric fog helps the frame rate a lot. Playing with the sliders and making small changes in the settings menu also has a huge effect.

I run the game using a Geforce 7600GT video card , a P4 3.0 processor and 2 GIGS of RAM. I run TMO with everything maxed out, but with the event camera disabled. I also disable some windows background programs during game play. The game looks stunning, plays smooth, and I get between 37 and 45 fps on the exterior shots. In port, the fps drops to about 24.

I have a 7600GS w/500 mb, a P2.8 and 2 gigs ram. I have everything in the left selectable column unchecked and everything in the right column checked except vertical sync. My sliders are mostly in the middle. I get excellent fps, the game is smooth except thru the TDC, then it's slightly jerky. Game looks wonderful. I have event camera off.

I think the extra gig of ram I installed a year ago really helped.

Ok i will go for the extra gb of ram and use it in dual channel. at least the load times can be reduced ands the overall performance better.

i think that my FSB is 400 but it´s the maximun for the motherboard and memory type
(DDR400) i have to check the settings because all is in auto, and a lot of things can be tweaked manually, like wait times and others...

I would leave the bios settings in auto unless you love torture. 2G mem is considered the minimum standard for demanding gaming.

I use this program to squeeze an extra couple frames out of my system.

Yes.. true.. i tried the manual settings and i started to have blue screens at the boot , so i return to the auto settings.

i´m going to buy a 1 gb stick and set the ram to dual channel.

thanks

As you can see here, a proper 2600XT should be 3 times faster than 6600GT. If it doesn't, it means the video card is waiting for the cpu to send data. And since you already got the 2600XT (which is not bad), you could buy a 3200+ (I think you could get it really cheap (2nd hand)).

Also, 2gb of RAM makes a big difference on your gaming experience.

I play SH4 in 1600*1200 with a Barton 3200+, ATi 3850 and 2Gb of ram and I get over 50 FPS (settings on high, including Volumetric fog).
Even in 2048*1536 it manages to render 22 fps in port:

I did some testing and seems that my low performance is caused by drivers or some incompatibility.

In a patrol using sh3, with a convoy at night, when the ships use the search lights the framerates dropped below a tolerable level using the external camera , a severe slowdown, while with my old 6600 i don´t have any problem in sh3.

i will try catalist 8.4 and see how it performs.

i´m now with 8.6

Hartman,

SH4 is far more dmanding on ANY system than SH3. They can hardly be compared. If you had a fundamental problem that drivers would correct, it would also affect your SH3, just be worse with SH4. You might be demanding too much of your system and setting the effects in the game too high. It's unlikely reverting your catalyst will do anything for you.

I would suggest again you visit your MB or computer manufacturer web site and make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound and chipset. These are often over-looked.

I would also wait to make any more driver changes until you see what the additional 1 gig mem will do. If it's slow memory, you might not see a big change, but there will be SOME improvement. I went through a few graphics cards and it wasn't until I got a X1950 that I got the performance I was satisfied with.

I believe an AMD 2400 is a 2GHz processor which in a dual core is roughly equiv to a 2.8 GHz P4. Anything less than 3Ghz equiv chugs on SH4. You have to have a 2.2 DC to get P4 3.0 performance.

Good advices ,

the big problem is not sh4, it performs a bit better compared with the 6600gt and seems to be more stable. the problem is sh3 with the lights at night and the slowdown.

This week i´m going to buy the memory and see how it performs , and then perhaps i decide format my HD and install last versions of all drivers.

thanks

With my system (as per specs in my sig) I would love to run in higher resolution. Running at 1024 x 768 gives me the best fps, around 35 external. Of course the ingame graphics are not maxed out and no volumetric fog and AA either.
