Hi to all,
I have been a long time SH3 & 4 player; recently I had reason to reformat my hard drive, so for a while I have had the pleasure of reinstalling everything on my PC. Now here's the thing, I'm having real difficulties reinstalling all my old favorite games. After numerous attempts with SH3 I decided perhaps my disk was too beat up so I bought a new game, just reinstalled and went to patch it, no dice, I get the following error c/program files\ubisoft\silenthunterIII\anim.act:unknown version, Can some one help. Then with SH4 I reinstall, then install the patches, no problem except when I open the game it shows vers 1, and the U-boat missions disk doesn’t work either I cant patch to vers5 and cant therefore play U-boat missions. Another favorite game Medieval Total war, I cannot patch this either, and it keeps crashing. So my question is, after a complete reformatted hard drive, and a completely virgin registry, and a new windows XP install, and everything running and in perfect order, it seems none of the games I have enjoyed for so long will play or can be patched. Does any one have any ideas? Rascal |

Try this:
Unistall SH4 (or any one of the other games) and then check the location where you installed the game. You will probably find that there are still some Folders and files still remaining that the unistall (and reformatting) did not remove. Delete all Folders related to that game and then reinstall. If that solves the problem for one game then repeat for the others. |

Rong is right. You must go into My Documents and Local Disc/Program Files/Ubisoft and delete all references to SH3/4.

Umm, he reformatted the HDD, that alone would clear the MBR,, and there would be no past references to anything on the newly formatted HDD.
The problem he is having is something else.

I'd remove all the games via add remove programs, then delete all folders associated with the programs and last but not least I'd do a regedit and delete all registry keys associated with the games. A word of caution: If you've never used the regedit function you can really bugger up your puter so always make a backup of the registry before tinkering. After that go to a DOS cmd prompt and do a "chkdsk /r" and reboot your puter - this will take a while depending on the size of the HD. After that try to install one game at a time and work out the bugs before installing multiple games that won't run. Perhaps if you stick to one game you're trying to install the help here can nail down the problem. Good luck! |

I think your both right, I understand how to remove a game completely, I'm quite familiar with goinmg into regedit and taking out every last little detail.
I even removed the Ubisoft folder and all it contained, and the SEGA folder for Medieval Total War as well though that game is not my big concern here. I read somewhere that taking out the CMOS for a minute or two also works. I've noticed on a couple of games forums where people are having a similar difficulties as myself. I wonder if the disks themselves have some sort of cut off, like a specific number of installations beyond which they cannot be reinstalled. I seem to be having an inordinate number of problems with games even though my machine is only about a year old and has all the latest sound and video drivers. Somewhere else I heard that I'd be better with a dedicated sound card as opposed to the inbuilt sound card on my mother board, does any one have anything to say to this? Quote:

Removing the battery from the CMOS will only serve to reset your BIOS. You then have to reinstall your BIOS.
As far as the CDs are concerned, you can reload those all you want, there is no limit on those.

What are your computer specs? Are you running Vista? Have you tried to clear everything out and just install one game to begin with. You did purchase these games correct? |

Is it a multi-partition drive?
PM me if you'd like some "unofficial" help. ![]() |

What happens when you try SH4?
Did you try it before you patched it? |
