Das Boot(The Boat)
Lothar-Gunther Buchheim Work of fiction based on his experiences as a correspondent during the war. If you want life aboard a U-Boat, this is very descriptive. From the boredom of endlessly patrolling to the terror of 6 hours of depth charge attack. ![]()

Exactly what I was going to say, sharkbit. Fascinating descriptions of a sailor's thoughts during the whole experience.

Hirschfeld Secret diary of a U-boat published by Cassell Military in the UK, memoirs of a signalman, one of the few by a NCO. There's also Operation Drumbeat by M. Gannon, both are very good on the day to day life aboard a U-boat.

U-boats at war (German Submarines in action 1939-1945)
by Harald Busch original title: 'So war der U-Boot Krieg' published 1955 author was a U-boat man himself and the book contains many excerpts from war journals and eye-witness accounts. Quite anecdotal and quite fascinating. ![]()

"Nach Kompass" by Karl-Friedrich Merten.
Don't know if it ever was translated, but it is one of the best U-Boat captain memoirs, especially if you consider that he wrote it at age 87(!) Especially since it offers a profound insight into the training and service during the 1920s.
