Default Sound Tests on a Real Fleet Boat

To add realism for visitors visiting the USS Batfish, we set up speakers with sub-woofers in the engine rooms to simulate the engines running. We have it loud enough that you're ears almost want to bleed and the visitors don't stay in that area for very long. The sub-woofers also vibrate the deck plates, which is a nice touch. We've had people ask us if the engines were really running. :p

Anyway, if you walk forward of the forward engine room through the bath area and into the crew's berthing, the engine noise is a faint hum. If you walk forward into the crew's mess, the noise disappears.

In August we want to have large speakers under the deck also playing engine exhaust noises and bow wave noises. This will be for a living history event - VJ Day. I will make note of how loud/audible the exhaust and wave noises are from the CT and the CR. My guess is that it will be pretty muffled in the control room. We're thinking that this is mainly due to cork lining the hull.

So, my plan for my copy of the game is to edit the internal engine noise way down so that it is barely audible.

Wow, sweet idea. Should really help people get a feel for how it must have been on the boat during operations.

Sounds cool! Now all you need to do is mount the sub on some sort of gimble set up to make it rock n roll, and don't forget to hand out the Dramamine to all the guests!:rotfl:

Nahhhhhhhhhhh,

It's more fun watchin' the land lubbers turn green!

Anybody for a nice greasey porkchop, or a hunk of hard salami on rye?!

I'd like to see the basin that she sits in now get filled with water to make her float, but also have stantions built under her to rest on when the water is drained. It will make for easier maintenance and add realism. We're a long ways from making that happen.

I would also like to see the galley get restored to working order. I don't think it would take a lot of work to get the grill and ovens working, again. We could pass out greasy burgers as visitors pass through. The boat also lacks running water, which is needed for cooking.

Basically, all that works on her are the internal lights and speakers... and one original radio receiver that I have to replace the cord on. Currently, our battle announcing system (1MC) is a laptop with a stereo boom box for sound amplification over the speakers, which we wired together in parallel. I have a lot of the SH4 sound effects on the computer for alarms, announcements, etc. This weekend will be the first time in 39 years that general quarters or a diving alarm has been sounded through those speakers.
