"Torrentspy Dinged $111 Million in MPAA Lawsuit" - Which they paid a hacker $15000 to help them.
I hate anything Torrent, but really 111 million is over doing it! Quote:

They won't realize anything like that. I seriously doubt Torrentspy has any source of revenue or assets that equal $111 Mil. Wouldn't be surprised if the plaintiffs end up in the hole due to legal fees. On balance, however, the deterrence value may be worth it.

"must pay the maximum $30,000 for "each of the 3,699 infringements shown.""
The largest copyright penalty for a single infringement is $283,000. It was levied in the late 1980's for the improper publication of one picture. Penalties have to hurt if they are going to be successful. You can't give a big company a $10,000 fine and expect them to take notice. I am glad the government is cracking down on IP theft. It is the right thing to do. Unfortunately, IP theft is often considered a "victimless crime" (aww just this once won't hurt them). I would support any legislation that takes IP theft from Tort to Crime. (I bet this thread gets interesting) Anyone got popcorn?
