Default UK Prisons

At this rate they will be 5 star hotels, I'm going to book me a cell now before the rush.

Mr Travis said: "Drugs are coming into prisons at a rate that's so dramatic that drugs in prisons are actually cheaper than on the outside.
"There's a classic case in Yorkshire where members of the public were climbing over the prison walls to take drugs into the prison. "They put up ladders to climb over the walls, but prisoners were so comfortable in the environment they were living in that none of them tried to climb up the ladders and escape."
Maybe the prisoners may like a copy of GWX 2.1, jim you got a ladder handy?

No, we need the existing prisons to become a place where people dont want to go.

If I was in prison and someone offered me an escape I would not take it. Either you
will be caught or you will spend the rest of your life looking over your shoulder.

If you keep a dog in a cage for long enough (even if the cage is in a terrible condition)
the dog will still sleep in the cage and go back to it when it is scared if you leave the
door open.

All that said, I would like to see many changes to the prison system here, but I am under
no illusions of the solutions being simple or easy.

Do you want to go to prision?
If not, then how much would I have to pay you to spend the next 15 years in prision?
Would you do it for any price?

The bad news for you Steed is that the prisons are already crammed chock a block. You are too late.

My calming presence is just what this unruly prison system needs. One of me for every cellblock.

Tchock a block.

Whether or not I want to go to prison isnt the issue. Its whether or not the people who commit the crimes are intimidated by it so they wont commit them in the first place.

The lax sentencing system, Sky TV, and the other things the article mentioned must look like a 'reasonable risk' to a thief or criminal.

Everyone here knows my view point so there's no point repeating myself. The only thing I will say is this, we're boned as the years go on.

OK, So I will put it another way.

Would you take £5000 of honest cash if I offered it to you with the warning that
accepting it would mean there was a 50% chance that you would unjustly go to
prison for the next 15 years as a result of accepting the cash.

If you would not take that risk for £5000, then what amount would convince you
to take that risk?

If no amount of cash would convince you to take that risk, then you must think
prison is quite intimidating, however, that would make you a hypocrite.
So, how much would it take?

Whether or not you think prison is intimidating is very much "the issue" if you are
claiming it is not intimidating.

Just so this thread is framed in context... people do realise that the articles were referring to Catagory C and D (England and Wales male system of catagorisation) prisons...

For an ignorant American, could you explain what that means? I'm guessing (hoping) from reading the thread that it's a nonviolent offender, min security type place?

Male adult prisoners (those aged 21 or over) are given a security categorisation soon after they enter prison. These categories are based on a combination of the type of crime committed, the length of sentence, the likelihood of escape, and the danger to the public if they did escape. The four categories are:
  • Category A prisoners are those whose escape would be highly dangerous to the public or national security
  • Category B prisoners are those who don’t require maximum security, but for whom escape needs to be made very difficult
  • Category C prisoners are those who can’t be trusted in open conditions but who are unlikely to try to escape
  • Category D prisoners are those who can be trusted not to try and escape, and are given the privilege of an open prison. Prisoners at 'D Cat' (as it is commonly known) prisons, are, subject to approval, given ROTL (Release On Temporary Licence) to work in the community or to go on 'home leave' once they have passed their FLED (Full Licence Eligibility Dates), which is usually a quarter of the way through the sentence.
Category A, B and C prisons are called closed prisons, whilst category D prisons are called open prisons

I do believe when Jeffrey Archer was doing a stint in an open prison he took a female warden out to lunch, class act. :rotfl: :rotfl:
