Keep in mind, that could happen to any company. All it takes is one bad apple in the right position within any company.

Example: 7-8 years back - Couple shopping at Macy's in New York City. Noticed the girl at the check-out swip the AMEX card twice. Manager called over, found that the "second" card reader (that needed that second swipe) was hooked up to the palm pilot she had stashed under the counter. 15,000 (yes, 15 thousand) credit card numbers were still in it. Every night, she'd go on to an IRC chat room to trade with counter-parts in other parts of the world. I think she's still in jail.

Point is that no matter where you go, all it takes is one wolf in the fold to cause a problem like this. Don't blame the company. They don't like the situation any more than you do.

But thats the problem Zayphod. These companies know the dangers but they are still willing to take a chance with our personal information for what? So their marketing department can target potential customers better?

I have to agree. This should not be tolerated on any level.

"It's not our personal information at risk! Who cares? Go ahead an OK it. We're going to be rich off these people, and they're putting their lifestyle on the line. By the way, did you up the advertisements for the company? I'll be expecting three new ads before the day is over, in my office and on my desk."
