It's early war and I'm patrolling Luzon/Japan route. Lots and lots of air radar intercepts particularly in the middle of the night (i.e. zero-dark-thirty etc). Is this intended or am I missing something? I've been attacked a few times when it's quite dark (Jap pilots apparently have NVGs, LOL).
I'm using 1.4 (still), can't seem to find the add-on up here, certainly not at EBGames. |

If your playing stock - yes thats the way its coded. Look into getting the ASW mod - it changes the traffic to be more realistic.

I recommend upgrading to TMO for the 1.4 game. Two things will happen with the planes, 1 good and 1 bad:
GOOD: The number of air contacts will go WAYYYYYY down. The only planes that will show up in the game will be dedicated sub hunters, so unless you've been spotted and called in, you won't see them very often. BAD: The evil, evil aircraft of TMO can see you under the water. They'll occasionally spot you 150-200 feet down and still bomb you at that depth. Be very very careful with aircraft in TMO.

Technically, spotting one that deep probably is impossible for the time period. The problem is the game doesn't allow you to differentiate. Ducimus added sensors that let them spot the plane below the surface; the Pacific is pretty clear apparently, and I've seen photos of submerged subs where they were obvious so it's possible. The result was that sometimes the random number generator results in a spotting, even though you might be 200 feet down, pointing directly at or away from the plane, rough seas at dawn/dusk, and in view for 10 seconds.
Someone posted a pretty good strategy for dealing with radar air contacts in TMO: as soon as the SD radar reports an air contact, check and see if it will come within view of your boat (about 5 nm). If so, submerge to at least 250 feet deep and go to 16x time compression until 5 minutes have passed. Once that happens, come back to periscope depth, extend the SD antenna mast, and if you don't get any air contacts on radar, go ahead and surface. It works pretty well; even if they spot you 250 down the air-dropped ordnance can't go that deep so you're safe. But I've been bombed at 180 feet before.

Whether you are running 1.4 or 1.5, I highly recommend moving up to Trigger Maru Overhaul, as the issues were addressed to a point.
