Type II is nice at the start of things, but as soon as the type VII is available im switching to bigger cans. The main reason being the luck of shipment along the east coast of Brittain.
Playing at 100 % reality the torpedo loadout is slightly insufficient for me, as You can see from the screen below the sinking rate improved when i switched to its bigger brother VIIB. I still like the look of type II, but for sinking purpose its just not up to the job in the later years.

the type II/D hold six torpedoes in GWX. And I plan on using it the entire war. My current patrol has me sneaking through the channel in Jan 41 and then patroling the Irish Sea. I find myself playing this campaign alot more then my Type VII campaign. Alot of tense moments. Sneaking past 2 destroyers in 25m of water get the blood going

Yes, the IID is a good boat, quite a difference with the very limited range of the IIA. I have make 9 Patrols with the U-138 of the 1th Flotilla, and was really good; each of your 5 torpedos count and muss aiming with many precission. Also the 20mm are quite a good addition to engage some unarmed small targets, like tugs, schooners, unarmed trawlers, etc, and sometimes ,after a good torpedo hit the target was finnished and sunked with some good placed 20mm hits in the waterline.

It wasn't a mistake. Clay Blair in his two volumes on Hitler's U-boat War says they carried six. Kpt Lehman used that as his main source. I disagreed and we had many discussions, but there was no definitive source which proved it one way or the other.

If you're going to say things like "five like the reals IIA and IIDs", please show a source that proves this. We would like to know.

There also many related details of missions or patrols, Wolfgang Lüth U-138, Kretschmer in U-23,for example, about this five torpedos in the types II.

The total capacity of torpedo loadout on the Type II's was indeed six. Therefore, to be accurate, any author would be forced to list the total possible loadout as being six, and accounts for so many similar specifications in various books.

HOWEVER, this practice appears to have been dropped nearly immediately after the start of the war... reducing the accepted loadout to five torpedoes.

A sixth torpedo would affect balance/performance of the U-boat, (both surfaced and submerged) and would have taken up a great deal of already clausterphobic space on the II's.

Infact, the impression that I get is that loading a sixth torpedo aboard the Type II's caused a world of potential headaches for a U-boat commander... up to potentially leaving behind a couple of crewmen.

Though at the moment the source escapes me, Admiral Erich Topp directly stated that his Type II carried only five eels. That account was the clincher as far as I was concerned.

In effect arguments for both five and six torpedoes aboard Type II's are both correct. Unfortunately, unlike date-based torpedo types, the total possible number of torpedoes for player U-boats in SH3 is not date based. Only one total can be modelled into SH3 and subsequently GWX.

Therefore it is only natural that we modelled the most prevalent total loadout.

Und zat... ees zat! The total number of torpedoes for Type II's will not be changed for GWX again.

I have, in one of my sources, a nice drawing of a Type IIA with 6 torpedoes. It was not comfortable with the 6th, plus the Kaleun, in deciding to carry the extra torpedo, had to sacrifice certain provisions.

The 6th torpedo seems certainly discretionary and assuming the source's comment about comfort is correct, certainly not a decision I would envisage as being overly popular. But that's just my assumption, based in no way on any definitive source.

So my view is, just because I can carry 6 torpedoes doesn't mean that I want to or even should.

In any event, were I not happy, a change is only a simple file edit away. If I really wanted to, I could even randomise the number in SH3Cmdr and get either 5 or 6, or even date base it so that I start the war with 6 until a certain date and then revert to 5, or vice versa, or whatever. Imagination.
