Hi all,
I noticed that there are Great Lakes Freighters in SH3,not sure if it is part of GWX or the stock game,I am wondering if GLFs were actually in Europe during WW2 or in the Pacific for that matter,or are these ships just added to the game.I can't find any info on any of these ships in the Atlantic,if anyone has any info on this,I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you...

personally, i dont have a difinitive answer for you.
BUT i do know that the ships were added as a result of GWX. I also know that the GWX modding team did hundreds of man hours of research into the war in the atlantic and WW2 in general for each bit of content they elected to include in the mod IIRC... pretty much every boat that was able to float was put into service. someone will come along with a 100% answer... but i have a feeling the great lakes freighters were used in the atlantic.

Quote from GWX manual (page 425):
Great Lakes Freighter Historical background Great Lakes freighters or “lakers” ranging from a 1,000 to over 10,000 GRT have hauled bulk cargo such as iron ore, lumber, limestone, grain, salt, coal, cement, sand, slag, and potash through the North American Great Lakes since the 19 th century. These boats do not experience saltwater corrosion and can have careers spanning decades; however, several were lost during World War II after the British government requisitioned Canadian lakers to move bulk cargo on the high seas. The Chicago Tribune newspaper used the MV Chicago Tribune to carry pulpwood from sawmills in the upper Lakes to an Ontario paper mill to make newsprint; the Luftwaffe sank her in the English Channel on June 18, 1940 while she was hauling Welsh coal to France.865 Figure 485: Great Lakes freighter M/V Chicago Tribune on the way to the Tribune’s paper mill (1930) 866 The Great Lakes freighter in GWX The Great Lakes freighter in GWX is a generic representation of the Great Lakes freighters called into service on the world’s oceans. It will randomly sailing alone and as called for by the campaign scripting. Thanks guys very much,as a person living in Michigan,I have a fondness for the Great Lakes Freighter, been around them all my life, but I had no idea they sailed the Atlantic.
I concider myself a history buff, and thought I knew a lot about WW2,but you guys got me beat 10 fold. This is why I love this sim,you notice I don't call it a game,I like factual events, and GWX does that. When I looked through the scope and saw it,I thought NO WAY,it was a shame to sink her ![]() Thank you for the links too ![]() You guys ROCK...Thank You ![]()

As another Michigander who loves the Great Lakes freighter, I was so happy to see the ship included with GWX. I never saw one in a patrol, but if I did I wouldn't have been able to sink her. Great Lakes freighters just look too... elegant to do that. I'll send a traditional styled bulk carrier to the bottom no problem.
![]() Come to think of it, I think the Deep Sea Detectives dove on a wreck of a Laker that was sunk in the Gulf of Mexico or something. I only saw the episode once and that was quite a while ago. I wish that show was still on. ![]() |
