Has anything changed as far as targeting is concerned in the add-on? Is it easier, harder, just plain different?
Cause I'm trying to decide if I want to spend the money on it and I dont want to till I know how much harder or better its going to be. |

It's hard to say. Some people find it harder, some people find it easier.
It can be just the same, as you could just use the same old aob/speed/distance techniques. The US and the Germans used two different types of 'tactical computer' to compute firings solutions. If you've played SH3, you allready know what the addon is gonna be like. If not, you gotta try it. ![]()

The targetting and feel is more or less identical to SH3 uboats. For me i prefer that. Especially since the American system relies more on a periscope reading. You can manually do range but its rather fiddly and i can only get it up to 1225! I dont want to put you off but i felt cheated with no German voices, no missions. If you go for it, get the mod downloaded that sorts that out and never, ever, ever play it without

I like the U-Boat. I really miss OLC GUI. And I'm much more of an expert in the fleet boat than the U-Boat. It is too easy to sink obscene amounts of tonnage, but obscene tonnage is always a lot of fun for awhile. The mods will come to knock that down to size.
There aren't enough escorts. I only ran into five with two BBs and a battlecruiser. They were too easy after my GWX and TM experience. I didn't like that so much. But I had more fun than I should be allowed to have with the add-on. I recommend it without reservation. Learn the Fast-90 technique in the U-Boat and you don't have to worry about range or stale data ruining your shot. Check out this provisional link and I'm fishing for suggestions to improve the instructions. Illustrations will be inserted before it finds a permanent home. I had trouble understanding Wazoo's instructions, so I decided to take on repopularizing his great technique. It was the basis for the Dick O'Kane fleet boat method, so I'm returning a favor there.

I'll bet you i can shoot and hit a target blind, without ever raising the periscope, with the US TDC. |

Aye, think when i posted i wasnt very good with it and was missing the "send bearing to TDC" button!:rotfl: TDC is a bit overpowered for sonar shooting after a U-boat! As been said, its two different things.
Now if only i could get the sonarman to track my target of choice in multiple contact scenarios! ![]() |

The american TDC is much more sophisticated, and the position keeper is a true jewel. However, as it happens in many things when comparing US vs. german submarines, you find again that the different purposes/doctrines caused different evolutions.
The US TDC was designed with submerged attacks in mind, and as such it relies in quick periscope sightings to refine the solution, by checking the position keeper data against the scope observations. Thus what Ducimus says is absolutely true, once the solution has been refined, the US TDC has the wonderful property of keeping you updated about where the target should be, allowing you to even fire without a periscope visual contact. The german TDC was designed with the night suface attacks in mind, and that's why it updates the solution based in the bearing of the optical devices (UZO/Scope), and not independently. Cheers

U-Boats and Fleet Boats are different!
Don't expect each to play to the other's strength! They are both marvelous if they are used the way they are designed to be used. German hit percentages were better than American's. What does that tell you about the "marvelous and much more advanced American TDC."
It tells me that its primary effect was to make commanders lazy and blow their opportunities. Its complexity opened up three times as many doors for error to enter the system. That and the "hide your head in the sand" stay submerged all day at 2 knots cancer that pervaded the American sub fleet. The U-Boat and Fleet Boat are equally capable of hitting their target. The difference is that the Fleet Boat can bring enough explosives to the party to make a greater impact.
