Default When chasing a radar contact, do check the weather!

Like the subject says, check the weather when chasing a radar contact. I had picked up a radar contact south of Tokyo. It didn't seem to be going too fast so I turned around and gave chase. I am watching the nav map when my crew sights the target. Too my utter horror it is very foggy and a light cruiser is emerging from the fog!

I order back emergency when he opens fire. I then order a crash dive. After I start to dive, I order periscope depth. I figure once I go under the waves I can try and throw some torps his way. In the meantime, I have the damage control party hard at work. The hull indicator says 28%. I fire four torpedoes his way. One dives deep and the other a dud. After I fire from the bow I make a quick turn and fire some from the rear. Two hit him in the props, but that doesn't slow him down. After he escapes to the fog, I surface and follow with radar. I stalk him (he is zig-zagging) and set up another attack. I order PD and send another volley of fish his way. All of them were duds. I let him get away and surface again. I stalk him some more with radar and again set up another attack. This time I send four torpedoes from the stern tubes. Three hit and one is a dud. Finally, the bugger is goin down.

Here's how many torps I used on him.

The mark shows first contact with radar.

Here are my battle scars.

After that encounter I decide to head back to Midway to end the patrol. I loved sending something bigger than a DD to the bottom, but next time I gotta be sure to check the weather.

Whew!!! A little unorthodox, but you got the job done, and in the end that is all that matters

Conga rats on not only surviving but sinking your target.

But I have to admire also the great graphics of SH4.

Ok, I'll bite. Wasn't it possible to know the range to the target using the radar? I just don't quite understand how it snuck up on you when the radar should've shown the range, at least within certain parameters.

It wasn't so much that it snuck up on him, he was expecting a merchant and due to the foggy conditions it wasn't until he got close that he saw the ship was not a merchant but a Cruiser. his best bet would have been to submerge when he drew near just to be safe... make this a lesson, in bad weather take a peek from safety. When you assume, you make an a$$ out of U and ME

That's just how it happened, too. In SH3 I could tell the weather was bad because the shallow depth meter would bounce irradically. In SH4, it holds reliably still. I remember that assume thing, too.

From that one shot with his tail in the air, it appears you didn't actually hit his props.

Congrats on the kill, though, and even more for surviving.

Otto Kretschmer is not amused by your unintelligent and wasteful use of precious Mark 14 torpedoes.

Even though you didnt hit his props, surely they would've been blown away in the blast from that proximity? :hmm:

I didnt say so before, but this was a good read. The player in me that longs to play is envious! From a mod design standpoint, Im happy with the torpedos , seems to be in the ballpark of what i was aiming for. edit: although the DD seems a little tough. I figure your either using NSM, i upped the hitpoints on some of the tin cans a bit too much, or a bad "dice roll" on the mn/max damage inflicted by the torpedos, or one prematured before it acutally hit.

Err.. your sonar doesn't work? I usually estimate ships position using sonar.. esp in bad weather. dive to 30m and peri once in a while.
