Default Dezember '42 - and it starts to get nasty ...

So...

I was forced to "restart" my SH3 career and lazy guy I am I started right away in April 42' with a IXc

Now I am in Dezember just returned from a freaky patrol starting from Bergen to AM88 ... I decided to take the north route around scapa flow... and well... I thought... lets pay Tommy a visit ... in a IX :hmm:

And guess what... a good plan is worth more than 100 tries.

I slipped in around 1900 when the sun had set... going decks awashed and sneaking past the patrols going to peridepth at silent running when spotting DDs etc.

when I was entering the bay suddenly two DDs came from behind very fast (the landside based sensor stations seemes to have picked up a signal from my boat or the periscope as/though I was dived and running silent)

... well I got out of their way and it was pure luck they did not do an active search... when I was 1km from the position the shores are closest they were there... and made a blind DC bombing assuming I was there... funny... cause one ran into the coastline and was stuck...

easy target... I just can not resist

I then got into the bay at around 2300 with fully loaded tubes - all T2 torps - to sneak away onces the torps were running

Shot two Fijis and a big Troop Transport for overall 31000 plus the DDs I had shot so far (yeah I know... I know )

All that was not a big deal imho... getting out was even more easy as almost all DDs sent to search for me had run into the coastline and got stuck... more easy targets but I spoiled too many shots...... that was a bit anoying as I was prepared for a hard fight getting out expecting some DDs on my a**.
But well... the stupid AI ran straight into land.

Well... the fun begann when I was out of scapa flow heading west and reloading my tubes and reserves from the external reserves.... I never had som many planes on my back... they brought my boat down to 60% when I finally decided to crashdive each time I hear "plane spottet"... though I shot down two bombers .... the fighters are the ones giving me a headache I still have the standart tower with one flak ... need to get the double flak asap and later when available the big AA tower

So then I found a convoy... use the two FaTs.. not succesfull though I - by misstake - sunk an escort...
Shot a liberty that (nice explosion etc... still) got away and a big freighter for just 6000 additional ... the rest I spoiled the show ... they were going crazy and this also is annoying now... they just have no respect any more in 42...

Well.... 40000t and a messed up boat... cause the DDs that really were after me got me... the planes that were after me.... got me too..

it really gets tough now.

I already made my transfer back to Lorient cause this IX just is not meant for the PQ the 11th does from Bergen. I will try to do it with a VIIc/41 when available.

"Happy hunting grounds" ? - I wanted to ask for some info on targets at that time... 42-43... where are they? thanks

Hello,

The waters near Gibraltar are always a good spot. When I'm there, I usually stay about 40km west of the straight. Just stay submerged and wait for a merchant contact. You should be in a prime position to intercept submerged at slow or 1/3rd. As long as you wait for the destroyers/patrol craft to leave sound range, you should't have any problem, but if something does get too close, you have 1000+ feet of ocean depth to play with...plus you should have enough room to sneak away. I will usually stay 2 to 4 days there...I'm almost always of running out of eels by then .

Happy Hunting,

Voyd

PS: Watch out for aircraft during those dates...haven't had much problem with them in the earlier years.
