Default Round and round it went and...

Setup: I am placed between the two lines where T3 tankers are going to pass in front and behind me at the same moment, the gap is pretty short, some 800 yards .... I am not comfortable because I don't remember if the Mk14 torpedoes have a minimum range before being active like the german torps were)... but no escorts in sight, fat targets...
I shoot a quick succession of 3 front torps on a T3, one on a smaller merchant nicely positioned behind it, turn the scope around and shoot two more at the T3 passing behind me. For some unknown(stupid greed!) reason, i stay at periscope depth.

boom boom.... boom.... boom!

Nice, only one dud this time, the aft T3 is going down, the other two ships are heavily smoking. I'm preparing to surface to finish the remaining T3 (no gun on the merchants...eh eh eh</sadistic laughter>). At this point, I look left and i see a torp heading right at us at about 200 yds.

Boom!

It wasn't a dud after all.

Somewhere.. the evil torpedo gods are doing their best Dr.Evil impersonation I really feel for you, I had a similar experience but managed to escape with my life. I fired off a group of 4 torps at a large passenger liner and the 4th was an end-a-rounder, but for some strange bit of luck it was a dud as well. It bounced off the aft of my sub... once I started breathing again I managed to submerge and count my lucky stars.

that was nasty!

Why is it weird stuff happens just after we've just pulled a buffalo out of the hat. We're feeling all smug about plugging the T3 and boom! Any game that can do that is some kinda good!

Great story!

It's possible this happened with a uboot, I did a few sorties with both types since I got the addon... damn, no wonder my own torpedoes are out to get me...

*puts pipe down*

Default Round and Round

I've had the same thing happen to me, and researching the problem with the RL torps found that one of the issues (along with the firing pin being bent) is the torps would circle if they missed (or they missed because they circled - who knows).

Anyway, I got lucky as I was at periscope depth when the torpedo missed the intended target and circled around me. I happend to have a destroyer overhead getting ready to drop depth charges and had the external camera on the sub looking up at the destroyer when I noticed this torpedo coming from behind me. It hit the destroyer slightly off angle, but hard enough to stop her cold and cripple her. Just lucky that day.
