After Oct 44 you can enable the GWX Late war sensors mod
This will add radar recievers to the top of snorkels

RTFM

Done and done.

22 December 1944, day 37 at sea, 28 of them spent submerged and not once has the RWR's supposedly mounted on the mast detected anything. I may be doing something wrong but not RTFM isn't one of them. Before departing for my second patrol in November '44, I refitted with the latest available radar detector and have the Late War Sensors Snorkel Antennas Mod enabled in the JSGME Mod Enabler. If I've missed something else, please advise...

BTW I think that the GWX manual is a superb piece of work and as a game/simulator manual sets a standard few publishers are likely to achieve let alone surpass.

Good hunting

The top-mounted detector will only show up after Dec 44, and only if you use the Late War Sensors Mod. There was a recent query about making it available earlier (can't find thread) but after some people (incl. me) tried to mod it to do so and couldn't we hit an impasse.

I sail deck awash with the schnorkel raised so that I get a few extra seconds of thrust from the diesels before becoming fully submerged.

I remember reading somewhere that planes fly low under radar level to avoid being detected, and how could radar pick up such a snorkel? What about buoys? If Kaleun was clever enough to find a buoy to rise snorkel by it? Why didn't German drop bunch of small buoys that look like snorkel across sea and planes would be wasting their fuel and bombs on decoys.

Actually they did (buoys with a balloon tied on which has radar-reflective coatings), but the idea wasn't really practical.
