Default Talk about annoying! Patch 1.4

I was sent on a mission to photograph Tokyo Harbor towards the end of my first patrol, which was fine and easy enough. It was my first mission after a restart thanks to corrupted save files! When I first started I found out I'd forgotten to set my options so I had unlimited battery, something I really didn't care for but would fix as soon as I returned after this patrol, but ended up glad I had that.

I picked up a Medium Gunship in Tokyo Harbor, I was out of torpedo's, out of 4" shells and out of 20mm shells also, I couldn't shake this Gunship for the world. This thing followed me all the way back to Midway. That has to have been the most annoying thing I've ever seen in this game, to think that thing couldn't be shaken, even diving to over 450 feet, running silent, using decoys and every other evasion method I could come up with, I could do nothing to get away from it. It was stuck to me like it had a cable attached ..

Are you using mods? I play 1.4 without any mods and what you describe has never happened to me. I've always been able to shake (or get sunk by) every escort within 24 hours. I've certainly never had one follow me for thousands of miles.

Something to think about...
Silent running isn't enough when up against the superior escorts. You also need to slow to between 1 - 2 knots and do some evasive action. You should also take your crew out of Battle Stations if you are not repairing or re-loading torps. Battle Stations and of Damage Repair active mode increases your noise level. Obviously you had to come to the surface to get recharged a few times. You may have been too impatient and surfaced while he chould still detect you, causing him to turn around and chase you again. Surface at night long after you have lost him on the pariscope. Use slow speed for a while to keep noise down and get maximum battery charge rate. Speed up slowly in steps.

I'm using Patch 1.4 only, no mods at all. What had happened is I had to start a new game, somehow my saves had become corrupted from my previous game, and when I started out on the new career I forgot to set my reality options, therefore I had unlimited battery and everything. I didn't realize this unlimited status until I was over in Tokyo Harbor and I noticed my battery wasn't draining, so I figured I'd just set all my options when I returned. Never the less I ran into one of those Medium Gunboats with no depth charge racks and this thing latched onto me like a Sumu Wrestler and I couldn't shake it for anything. The danged thing followed me all the way back, I'd say within 100 miles anyway, to Midway before I finally slipped away in the rain. I've played many versions of this game but this was the first time this has happened to me anyway. I had already shot all my torpedoes and also all my gun ammo .. both 20mm and 4" .. so all I could do was evade. I figured it wouldn't follow me far, but omg it followed me all the way back to Midway, and an awful trip it was. The speed was slow on battery, that was bad enough, but about everytime I speed up the time it'd get knocked back down to 1 again because the gunship kept getting detected. Talk about a miserable trip across the ocean.

Just a quick thought
:

I've noticed that even the most tenacious ship will give up using the following technique: (note deep water only, right?)

I blastoff at flank, then dive to about 90 feet and all stop. Then I sit there all day. for the whole day. As soon as the red lights come on, up to scope depth, check it out, then surface and breathe the fresh, clean air of freedom.

I read a story somewhat like there....here I think. Where the sub only ever surfaced at night and it was a million degrees hot while submerged and stuff...sounded pretty miserable.

I had a similar situation with the Gunboat. I got a message that Japan had invaded New Guinea. I happen to be in the area dropping supplys to our troops (18 TONS in a RUBBER RAFT and in one trip ) So I stopped in to a port to see if the Japanese were using them. The Gunboat as you say "latched on" and I couldn't get rid of the pest. Fortunately I had some ammo for the deck gun and took him out. But it does seem like it's a bug.

Would such a small vessel have enough fuel to do that? Let me guess Ubi never modeled fuel usage for AI units...

Everyone should know you cannot use saved games on patrol from earlier patches. Only auto-in-port saves.
