Default bearing tool on nav map...?

hi hunters, some help please, if you could.

i have found the circular compass type tool on the nav map table - top right.

it has two sets of numbers flipped in opposite directions north - south.

when its on the map it can not be turned to face the direction of the boat.

ive tried to suss out what it does with attempts at using it - i think i have a rough idea what it does, something to do with plotting or tracking ?

and i can't use it; i'd like to be able to track a ship using hydro as very often i get a bearing - long range and either lose it through tracking or miss it or it just dissapears. i have a feeling this tool could be of help - am i right and if so what is it and are there some basic steps i could learn and polish up myself.

cheers

If I'm remembering correctly, that tool moves with the end of the line as you move it. It therefore shows the correct true bearing from your boat, since you are seeing it from the opposite direction.

Therefore, if you draw a line from your boat to the target, and the bearing is 240, if the tool was right side up it would read 060; but since it is upside down it will read the correct 240.

Also note that this is the true bearing, reading from North, rather than the relative bearing as seen from your boat's heading.

I think he refers to the stock protractor which is activated by clicking the "?" in the navbar and then selecting a tool like the ruler.

this tool is useful to determine a target's true course. for instance, imagine you have taken measurements of a target with 5 observations that you marked. you then connect the marks with the ruler tool to plot its course. with the protractor you can then determine its course.

This tool is iseful for any kind of plotting one could imagine. In simple words, it just shows you the "bearing", "angle" (whatever it should be called) of any line you wish to draw on the map. Useful for plotting own course, AOB, true bearing to target, target's course or just anything else.

I can't imagine U-booting withoout that tool.
