Default Crew Compliment

Starting a new campaign in a P-class I looked up the compliment for the sub and apparently it was 5 officers and 45 enlisted. After setting the crew up this way I realized it would take alot more crew management to stay on top of things in different situations. "all crew to battle stations" would actually matter as would crew members being skilled in different areas. Just wondering if anyone is playing this way. Seems kind of unrealistic that mid-war your veteren crew are all specialists at what they do and never move around the boat. Not to stir the pot, but it appears you would have to manage the crew similar to SH3 where every shift half the boat just didn't just twidle thier thumbs. For example, In real life, after diving to periscope depth, would the watch not move to new positions in the boat? Because if you fill all the boxes it appears they go play cards because thier duty is done.

i use a P Class and im going to try to finish the war with it if the game allows. started in dec 41 in manilla.

anyway, the P class only had a crew compliment of 55. according to http://www.geocities.com/bullhead262/ussubs/p_class.htm

not counting the gun positons on deck and the damage control postions in the set up menu, the porpoise holds 66 men. 66 men! what i do is only use 55 men.

i put 2 skilled persons per station on my boat typically, the rest are seaman 3rd class with mechinical skill (cross hammers). i kind of use SH3 as a template on how i compliment my submarine with officers and petty offiers to a degree. i think the americans could produce skilled sailors at a faster rate than the germans and didnt have to fill near as many submarines. (this is my opinion, i may be wrong) so i have a few more skilled sailors in game than i would in SH3. at the end of the patrol, ill rotate most of the crew out. it would be nice if the game included something like that.

i try and just use as many men as the real ones did. could u imagine 70 men on a P Class sub

i would really love some insight as well on this matter if anyone can shed some light.

Default Every Class

That actually is a good question . . . what are the actual billets for every class of Fleet Submarine.

I am currently on a Gar class and have maxed out the crew . . . I have 3 LTs (XO, CEO, & Torpedo Officer), 1 Lt (Conning Tower), 2 Ens (Conning Tower, & Repair), and 10 Chiefs (Aft Torpedo Room, 2 for Engineering Shift Leaders, CoB, Lead Electronics, For . . . now I know this is way maxed out.

I can only find Torpedo Officers in the LT range . . .

Any help here would be appretiated.

I got my info from here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Permit_%28SS-178%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Pickerel_%28SS-177%29
all the other porpoise class subs had the same crew compliments according to wikipedia from what I saw.

Default This is just not right

I ran a couple of simple tests on a p-class and to my surprise I found that the boat will run and make speed with just one 3rd class crewman (of any skill) in the engine room !!!! What’s more, it will dive, surface, turn, even fire torpedoes with nobody in any of the appropriate compartments !!! This is totally bogus for sim. Imagine a fleet boat run by one guy!!! (And no, it was not on battlestations).

Interesting. I spent almost all of my renown on a cracker jack torpedo room crew thinking I will get faster reloads and more accurate deck gun shots. I haven't timed the differance yet. I forgot to set realistic torpedo loading once with that crew and it seemed that torpedo reload time was almost only twice as slow as the deck gun. CL

Well, for what its worth. Wiki lists the USS Pickerel as having a compliment of 55, but when she was sunk in 1943, 74 men were lost. If my count is correct: 9 officers and 65 men.

55 men is probably her pre-war compliment.

Check out this site: http://www.csp.navy.mil/ww2boats.htm
for good info on the crew lists of subs that are on Eternal Patrol. It will give you a good idea of how many men were aboard and their rank and classification.

Another example: Wiki lists S-Boats as having a crew of 42. However, when S-44 sank, 55 men were lost and 2 survived for a total of 57. 46 men were lost and 3 survived when S-26 sank. Finally, 49 were lost aboard S-28.

Further on the P-Class. USS Perch was lost early in 1942 had 59 or 60 men. The aforementioned website states that 53 POWs were returned after the war and that 6 died in captivity. I have counted the crew list 3 times and keep coming up with 54 surviving crewmembers and 6 dead. The USS Pickerel I have already mentioned. The USS Pompano was lost with 77 crewmen on August 29, 1943.

Good stats, Takao. I think I used that page for a couple of the boats for my mod. From my notes, I know I used the following:
  • USS Perch
  • USS Corvina
  • USS S-44
  • USS S-26
Plus probably a few others. Wherever possible I used crew lists from the boat's first war patrol, as they reflect most accurately a boat's starting crew.
