Is there a way to command 'all' types during campaign?

Hi all,

I've played halfway through two campaigns now, both starting december 8 1941, the first in a Salmon, the second in a Tambor.

I've gotten offers of new command, a Balao the first time, a Gato the second.

Is there a possibility to start off in Manila in an S-18, and then progressively command all types of boat during the entire war?

I would, for example, like the option of starting in an S-boat, then get command of a Sargo (cause the former skipper got promoted to a desk ), then maybe a Gar to end up in a Balao.

Thanks for any info,

Greetz,

Well that is pretty much what I have done.

I started in Manilla at the beginning of the war in S37, was moved up to a Salmon, then a Gato and finally a Balao. There is no guarantee that you will be able to use all classes this way (I think some may only be available from Pearl) but you will enjoy a variety of different boats. I am on my 19th patrol and it is Feb of '45, so not long to go now.

The key is completing multiple objectives per patrol... as many as you can while fuel and ordinance hold out.

Same here. I've gone through the War not counting careers when I got sunk (I play dead is dead) and each career the AI gave me new commands, upgrades, etc. It doesn't seem like completing multiple objectives is mandatory however. Of course multiple objectives bring more excitement, fun, and renown. The AI seems to be satisfied just by always completing any assigned objective before ending the patrol.

Thanks, I thought the upgrade types were limited to types that came into service AFTER the start of the war (Gato and Balao).

I guess I've been 'unlucky' with upgrades and new commands, since I have renown up the yin-yang, after 4 patrols (middle of '42) I usually have about 10000 + renown (or does that make me look like a complete noob??? ), I understand that amount of renown gained from sinking ships is related to difficulty? (I play at around 70% difficulty, manual TDC all the way ).

Is there an amount of renown which should always (or very likely) produce a new command offer or tower/sail upgrade?

Not sure I understand your question... I spend every nickel of renown earned outfitting my boat and 'hiring' better crew each patrol. I'm not sure how it figures them out but the boat upgrades and new commands seem to have more to do with the number of completed war patrols and what year it is in the War.

In RL the BALAO class wern't available until Jul - Aug 43.

Sorry, don't know if I answered your question.....

Happy Hunting!

This was my point about completing as many objectives as possible.

There are two tracking mechanisms running in the game. Renown, a carry over from SH3, gives you the ability to obtain upgraded equipment and superior crewman, but it has nothing to do with keeping your career alive and moving forward.

Promotions and newer boats are controlled by the second tracking mechanism, which was not present in SH3. This looks at how effective you are at carying out orders and completing objectives. If you go out on a few missions and don't complete any objectives you are going to get retired quickly.

If you only complete one objective per patrol then you will progress in your career, but it will be very slow. If you complete several objectives per patrol you will become a standout captain and progress quickly.

Renown has nothing to do with it.

Is there any kind of penalty for not completing a mission? For example, if I complete four missions on a patrol, then get assigned a fifth and don't complete it, do I get any penalty for not completing the fifth? Is it any different than completing four and going home?

Yeah, I was wondering that too. For now, I save my game everytime I complete an objective, and when the next mission I get, when I report in, is too much of a hassle/bore (I just had a photo-recon of Yokohama harbor, completed this, sailed out to the Marianas, reported in, and got the request for an intelligence update of : Yokohama harbor ) ->> load savegame

This way I have avoided not completing any objectives.

On a sidenote: I just completed patrol 7 of my new Tambor/Start of war campaign after a reinstall (I now play vanilla, waiting for a full TM 1.7.5 install file ), now it's december 42, and I have completed (on average) 3 objectives per patrol. I've gotten four offers for a new command, but I chose to reload the Patrol-end savegame every time. Why?, you ask: every new command I was offered was the same USS Drum!!! I don't mind skippering a Gato around (as this will enable me to go to Brisbane command, the Tambor doesn't get that option (I have been looking through a bunch of game-files to figure that out)), but i would like to have some variation in the Gato-class sub I'm offered (Tang perhaps ).

I suspect the new command that is offered has something to do with the Date of Commission (found in the Roster-files, I believe), and I believe that USS Drum was the first Gato that was commissioned, so that's probably why I always get the Drum offered.

So, is there a way ingame to get a 'later-date' Gato?? perhaps wait with accepting a new command until a much later date?

Or will I have to alter some files, to get 'rid' of the USS Drum?
