Default Making my escape

Thanks to this forum, I'm now managing to get lined up and rack up some kills using TM and 100% realism. Unfortunately, I am still getting nailed by the escorts almost every time.

Here's my (failing) escape plan:

1. Immediately after firing off my torpedos dive as deep as possible (below the thermocline if possible)
2. Turn to present the narrowest facing to possible to escorts (or the closest escort if multiple)
3. Try and crawl away at minimum speed while running silent

I survive the first escort passs, but seem unable to shake them. what should I be doing after that first pass? Sitting still? Running slow and silent? gunning the engie to escape? Changing heading and or depth?

All advice appreciated. Help me make it home!

this is how i do it

first once you do your torpedoe run
if your finished then sail away from the convoy
ive noticed (im not sure if its true) that escorts wont go very far from the convoy
second
once you survive the first run
what i do is first (i suppose you have silent running on)
ok first drop a decoy and change course if you are lucky they will pin your decoy and attack it
so now your a litlle farther away
after they drop DC
repeat
always change course but trying to go generaly away from the convoy

changing depth can be useful too but i wouldnt do it much

once you think the dd are far away enough just crawl away at 1-3 speed and as deep as possible
if you cant seem to shake them just keep getting away from the convoy
they will just give up and go home (im almost sure they will)
but changing course and decoys are esential (to me atleast)

Default For what it's worth....

.....as deep as you dare, more thermoclynes = good.
You're probably already doing this, but I hit the 'gas' once the DD starts his run and go hard over on the rudder. Stay at Flank until the last depth charge has gone off (that's pure guesswork most of the time cuz you can't hear how many have been dropped) then back to 1/3 and start turning away fm the DD. Despite all the twisting and turning I still try to keep going in a similar direction (i.e. manoeuvre like hell but always keep heading in a direction that will get you away from the convoy/task force in the quickest time. If the convoy/TF is heading south then you should evade but keep trying to head in a northerly direction and increase the gap).

One thing I keep forgetting to try is "back slow" just to see if that'll throw off the DD's run, probably not.:hmm:

I find punching an escort in the nose usually works at distracting the others.

I know there are many an argument against this, but my method of attack that works more often than not is ... taking out an escort first.

Usually one downed or damaged DD is enough to ward off the others or I find the other DDs "pack" around where the injured/sunk DD is and search from there.

After the attack I usually go Thermal and 1/3 ahead or back (depending on my needs). I run 1:1 time when in situations like this too, and many is the time I am a good 4 - 5 hours of real time slinking away.

I have found the same thing, It's the "smack em around a bit and they are dazed" syndrome! If you are under attack do a 90 degree and run at flank put up a decoy then do another 45 degree turn . the second the depth charges stop cut the engine and drift, keep repeating this where ever possible (if they dont kick your but first)! I find if I do not defend myself up front they stick like relatives to a lotto winner!

I have had alot of success by letting the fish go, get under the thermal and steer myself under the convoy as best as I can and sneak out the back. Normally that only leaves one or two dd's to deal with initially and if they don't hear me, I'm off for more fun.

What date for this scenario? Time frame is very important (later war is tough).
