WWII Subvet Approved Depth Charge Audio

Here is Version 2 of my attempt to recreate a historical depth charge explosion. I played it for a subvet that has heard a few nd he said, "It sounds like a depth charge going off at a safe distance". We also concluded that there is really no way to reproduce a really close one without blowing up everyone's speakers as they were tremendously loud. 600 pounders dwarfed the 300's in volume and shock value as well. He also said the sound would be somewhat different according to how deep they were set.

As an average, he told me this audio is pretty good. He also volunteered to help me better understand by putting me in a barrel, sealing me in and setting a stick of dynamite on top. Now do that at random times for a few hours and I'd get the idea

I thought it might be worth it if I took a good microphone in with me. But--then again... Suffice it to say, I declined the offer of assistance

It is probably different than what you expect depth charges to sound like but--then again--how many of us have actually heard an explosion while we're underwater? I haven't and from what I've learned, I never want to!!!

Good post, and intresting sound. your right, it doesnt sound like anything we'd expect, but i think the analogy of being inside a sealed drum, and have someone bang on it is probably a good one. At the end of the day, you cannot argue with the voice of experience, the rest of us are just wannabe's.

. It sucks bad enough getting hammered in the sim

!!! I've never met a WWII subvet that talked about enjoying a good depth charging (and I have had the honor to talk with a few of them).

Ok, "wannabe" was a bad choice of words, we just "make believe" is what i really meant. Thats all we do here, play make believe. One reason i try to avoid realism arguments when they crop up. :rotfl:
