In a similar sort of situation, in stock SH3, I was loitering underneath a small merchant doing 4 knots (very slow convoy) matching its course then shooting my rear and front eels straight forward and back at the merchies there, almost a guarantueed hit...

And so it turned out, they both sunk, what I hadn't counted on was the zig-zag behaviour after being hit which resulted in a C3 from an entirely different lane plowing straight into my conning tower while I was trying to find out how to manually reload torpedoes...

Worst non-combat mishap however was a convoy I attacked when it had just started a general course change, when a ship got hit they all started zigzagging while changing course, complete mayhem, then apparently another C3 decided it was way off course, stepped on the gas to get back in line and plowed into my poor boat going 20 knots

lots of screeching metal on metal noises but no survivors

oh and had I mentioned being sunk by a tug?

Just came back from a long patrol with my shiny new VIIB (october '39) and a rather green crew.

It was rather boring since the weather was exceptionally crappy...

Anyway, while being on my way back, south of the shetlands, I spotted a small freighter chugging merrily right into a decent AOB.

Kaleun: Periscope depth!

Raised the periscope and started to take a bearing on the steamer.

I suddenly noticed my detection meter going red (yeah, I'm still using it... ). Since my sonarman didn't inform me on any other ships in the vicinity, I thought: "Well, must be a bug then".

Slowly moving into a perfect position to launch an eel, I suddelny heard high revving screw noises getting louder and louder.

Kaleun: What the...
*Spins periscope around*
Kaleun: ENEMY DESTROYER APPROACHING! ALAAAAAAAAARM!
*chugga-chugga-Chugga-Chugga-CHUGGA-CHUGGA-SPLASH-SPLASH-SPLASH*
Bernard: Wasserbomben!
Kaleun:
Kaleun: Depth under keel?!?
NO: 80 meters!
Kaleun:

Thank god the destroyer's crew must've been even dumber than my bunch o' twonks because they tossed the ashcans anywhere but not even close to my sub.

I quietly snuck away into deeper waters...

Memo to myself: Never -ever- trust the guy with the headphones.

Iv playing at full realism, ..hm make one hydrophone sweep completely by yourself? Just to make sure...

I've always heard covoys on my GHG before my crew ever noticed that there was a contact at all.

stay under a sinking ship is very dangerous, i remember a lot of time ago a thread with screenshots where a u boat was trapped by a sinking battleship until to the bottom , or exactly until the crush depth....

Also the stealth meter is a very bad thing because it can confuse you about the dangers.

in my first sh3 career i was in surface at night using my deck gun against a small cargo in the british channel, the indicator was in red sometimes , logical with the small cargo, but suddenly appears a search light near of my sub and i crash dived. curiosly after was in green ...

The incomming destroyer missed my stern by only a few meters ,and the deph charges killed one crew member and damage the hull.

Yes...it's dangerous....and temporary. But there is a certain twisted satisfaction to watching an escort steaming in frustrated circles around a dead, motionless hulk...knowing you're lurking under it outta reach.

You know you don't actually have to be under the damaged ship just near enough to prevent the DD's from exacting their revenge. If the AI calculates that the DD can't make a run to drop on you it will just run around for a while until it either runs out of patience (2-3 hours game time) or calculates that it can have a crack at you if the damaged ship sinks or you drift too far away from it.

My experiences tell me that if they can't use a stern depth charge, they use their K guns as they steam past

Now that would be an awkward surprise to those who think they're soooo clever and safe

I forgot to mention, they will also attack with the hedgehog as well, if so equipped
