This is kind of like the infamous greengrocer's apostrophe.

When I used to work at a newspaper as a writer, I got so p*ssed off with everyone coming up to me all the time asking me to correct their copy, where they weren't sure about whether an apostrophe was needed/in the right place, that I used to wind them up by convincing them the correct pronunciation for 'apostrophe' was actually A-POSS-TROFE.

It still makes me laugh to think how many people are going around thinking that what I told them is true.
