I am not too happy with the A400M too, but it has some advantages indeed that the C17 or C130 cannot compete with. It has a very low minimum speed, needs shorter runways than the others, can land on strips at least as rugged as those the C130 lands on, is capable to make mobile delivery in flight at altitudes as extremely low if not slightly lower than the Hercules (if that is possible), has a max. transport capacity of 38 tons, can have a maximum range (with reduced payload to compensate the additional fuel) of up to 3300 km, has far more modern avioncis and autopilot modes, and by default each plane can be used as a tanker, wether it be by installing additonal internal tanks, or tank aircraft from it's standard internal tanks. Due to it's low minimum speed it even can fuel helicopters in flight. Plus, for a plane of it's size, it has a signficantly smaller radar profile, which does not make it truly stealth, but harder to detect on radar than the hercules or the C17. Also, it is more maintenance friendly, of course, and everybody knowing a bit on aircraft maintenance knows that here is where the hidden costs are rapidly climbing and eating you up with each year of age of an aircraft. Only two russian tramnsport types have engines of greater power than those of the Airbus. So, while the C17 can carry up to 78 tons compared to the airbus' 38 tons, the Airbus nevertheless is the far more modern aircraft and is more robust in a greater diversity of tactical scenarios.
Wikipedia says nations with greater transport capacity needs like Britain, have additonally leased some C17, while Germany has leased or chartered some Antonow-70s. Still not really what I would like to see, but enough to make it seem justified to built it ourselves instead of buying your stuff. And finally, why should we spend money to make your jobs safe in america, when we could use the same money to make our jobs safe in Europe? ![]()

We've rented the odd Antonow-70 a couple of times. Beats our Starlifter to pieces.
