Back in the days of Silent Hunter 2 the dreaded auto targeting 'red triangle' was a permanent fixture in the UZO and Periscope views when targeting a ship, which put a downer on the game for those who like a little bit of realism.
It became a sort of running joke here at subsim, so much so that the smileys you mention were created in homage to the dreaded 'Red Triangle'.

All of the above is a lie. All hail the Red Triangle, your rouge overlord and its superior life doctrine.
