Hey ! I though cross posting was against forum rules !!!

Just kidding... that is awsome !

I have a document written by my uncle which is basically a journal he kept while in action in WW2. I have no where to host it but if someone wants to step up Ill send them the files (scanned into .pdf format) its complete with hand drawn maps etc.

Oh he was in the army so uh... not sub stuff.

I thought this particular Ubi post was worthy of a mention as the pics are so good. Nice that you have your Uncle's journal.

Certainly worthy of a cross post. Great he was able to add some more to his puzzle of family history!

great post, however this caught my eye. The man in the middle appears to be african-american, although he could be latino. Based on my readings, african-americans only served aboard ww2 subs as stewards/cooks, but is that a chief's cap that he is wearing?

Execellent some very good pictures there.

I think the black crew member is wearing, what appears to me to look like, a USMC dress uniform hat. Possibly a souvenir from one of the raiders? OTOH I don't know what head gear stewards were issued if they were issued different to other ratings.

Another thing that interests me is what was status of black servicemen in the USN and USMC? I know that the USA and USAAF were segregated until 1948 IIRC but it would crazy to have all black and all white ships!

In Silent Running by Calvert, he relates the death of the Jack's COB, and how another chief (by rank) was selected to be the new COB. The gentleman was the cook - and the wording of that and subsequent passages leads one to the assumption that the gentleman may have been "African American". The man continued the tradition of excellence that the position requires.

When society wishes for a true "color blind" society, it should look to the hero's it has sent into harms way - for when ordinance flies, there is no color that matters but one - and that is the one in which we all bleed to keep our brothers in arms, and our families at home, safe.
