Default Gunning down a ship

I'm currently playing 2 campaigns: 1 in a type IXb (my 1st 100k patrol) ; 1 in a VIIB (80k patrol so nice also). Both in their 4th patrol (2 testpatrols, 1 real patrol).

I played the VIIB 1st and then started a IX patrol due to reading a thread here.

I my 1st observations, damn that IX has many torps and golly a 37mm AA (wowsers this is a slow shooter, 1 shot / 5 seconds; the gaime sais 45r/min) and a kewl 105mm gun, with very few rounds.

1st I tought nice gun that 105, but today I needed 15+ rounds for a smal merchant this is similar to the 88. I know this is stil not many for reality sake, but is there a difference ingame between the both, or is it just talk?

2ndly the 37mm is that any good for finishing a small merchant off, or should I keep it for AA?

1 Aim at the waterline of the ship your trying to sink, it will require less rounds overall. The 105mm and the 88mm seem to have the same damage levels, but now and again the 105mm seems to have a bit more power.

2 The standard issue 37mm is useless! Upgrade to the auto 37mm as soon as it comes availble, the twin is the best of the lot. It can take down smaller ships without too much hassel.

It also depends on if your playing vanilla SH3 or GWX.

If you want the upgrades sooner, edit the basic.cfg file to an earlier date!

Good luck and good hunting!

GWX ofcourse andtnx for the reply.

If I do edit the basic.cfg it gonna be for the torps ya have to "buy". 500 reknown is way to much.

Yes, I've trimed the renown cost, as well as change the dates of release on various upgrades.

That the only tweak I've done on GWX, I use to have the spy sat mod when I played valnilla, but it was cheating a bit too much!

Release dates are fine. I just think buying a torp is wrong, I might impose a personal max though.. like on 2 or 3 "expensive" torps

Ive sank fishing boats with the 20 mm. I assume the auto 37 mm is great at this. But the first, single one is just useless.

I reckon the 37mm single shot will work on the fishing boats also fine. It isn't usefull for AA defense imho, if they kept the firing speed of 40r/min I think it might be ok.

The semi auto 37mm that your issued with is not worth it. Getting the auto single 37mm makes it a good weapon for AA and small ships. The twin 37mm is alot more fun!

Never noticed a difference between the 88 and 105. Always like the Type VII. Never have been able to figure out why...
