I play at 84% realism. Thats with manual targeting on.
I have external cameras on because I like to take in the graphics and watch ships sinking. I sometimes cheat and 'investigate' contacts, but I don't let that alter my strategy say if I decide to intercept a contact and it turns out to be subchaser or something I could have avoided after 'investigating' so I justify the compromise to realism that way. I also have navigation plot update on automatic. Used to have it off but its useful. If I was in RL I'd have another officer making a navigation plot of contacts etc anyway, rather than having to do all that work myself while I'm commandig the boat. I know some people don't like manual targeting because they don't like calculating firing solutions. But the truth is you don't have to calculate anything, the TDC does that (although I have learned a cool rule of thumb trick for finding how many deg to lead a target that is speed plus 3). All you do, as a real skipper would do, is collect and input information. The only thing that you need to calculate is speed and if you have the nomograph mod its pretty simple. I find its so much more rewarding to use manual targetting, feel like I've achieved something. By the way I am absolutely rubbish at maths and I mean terrible. My philosophy for the game is I try as much realism as possible but somethings really slow the game down, eg manually plotting contacs etc on the nav map. The frightening thing is you could play this game in pretty much literaly 100% realism, using no time compression, realistically navigating your way across the oceans in real time! Imagine that, spending 2 months infront of SH4! ![]() |

For a psych class, I'd try to interview some of the folks here that play the game in real time.
...and maybe try to figure out what's wrong with em. ![]() Another good topic might be to ask folks how the game has had both positive and negative influences on their real lives. |

Perhaps a more interesting aspect would be to 'study' the folks that obsess over the little things like the propellors turning the wrong way and are willing to spend months and 100's of hours trying to get them to turn the right way...
aka the modding forum :p |

It's been sometime since I've played a game actually, but I played with no realism, so to speak. It's not that I don't like a challenge, I simply don't care for tedium that doesn't enhance the game experience in some fashion. Unlimited fuel for example, now one can do it the realistic way and manage the fuel properly, return to base to top up during patrol but I prefer to simply assume that this occurs in the background and not be bothered with that aspect as micromanagement of fuel really isn't entertaining to me. I guess I'm simply a "casual" simmer.
Just my two cents though. ![]()

I think I'm about 73% right now...I don't play with manual targetting, and I leave the map contacts on. I think there's something else I leave unchecked as well but I can't recall at the moment.
I leave map contacts on, figuring my XO _could have_ done that IRL, as with manual targetting. I might try another game without that one on, just cause my tonnage numbers are ridiculously out-of-character for WW2...I've sunk more on a patrol than some boats sunk in the war. Manual targetting is unlikely to get turned on though; it just seems like something I wouldn't enjoy at all. Too much like work. I play games to get _away_ from hard things! |

I play with fairly low realism settings. I like having unlimited fuel and external views, the fuel because I'm prone to being severely damaged in the course of my patrols and like being able to limp home, and the external views because I love following my torpedos on their way to they target.
I do have unlimited O2 and batteries off, as I like the challenge of having a limited time and range under the surface. Good luck with your Psych Paper |

100% , just allowing me to move around the sub with the walk on deck mod.
map is always helping a lot to compute speed of target , thanks to the nomograph. then i compare with the automatic speed estimation of the computer (hey i am not alone in the sub ![]() |
