Default mod idea: destroying shore targets

While working on my loading screens mod, i stumbled upon this:

Quote from uboat.net

Quote:
Source: http://uboat.net/technical/guns.htm

Sometimes the gun was used to shell shore-based targets like in the Caribbean where they fired at various installations like oil storage's and alike or in the Northern Sea where they damaged some radio stations. An excellent hit was landed by U-242 on 10 Oct, 1944 when it shot down a Russian aircraft with her 8,8cm deck gun!

19 Apr, 1942 In the Caribbean Sea U-130 under Korvkpt. Ernst Kals successfully bombarded the oil refinery and storage on Curacao with his 105mm deck gun.

18 Sept, 1943 In the Northern Sea U-711 under Kptlt. Hans-Günther Lange destroyed with the 8,8cm gun the Russian radio station "Pravdyi" near by the town Indiga, approx. 68.00N, 49.00E.

24 Sep, 1943 The same boat destroyed a few days later the Russian radio station "Blagopolncija" on the east of the island of Waigatsch, approx. 70.00N, 60.00E.
now i've read already that all land installations are treated as environment and cant be damaged. but how about this:

could it be done to "skin" a tanker or something to look like a building (an oil tank for example), then place the oil-refinery-class-"ship" somewhere on the land, create as a mission goal the "sinking" of it... i havent been into the skinning job much so far, but it seems as if some mods have been created that sounded more impossible before it was done.

that would be really cool, as we could have a bit more variation to mission goals

Land units are indestructible.

We will need to find out how to stop the ship from accumulating damage. Currently, if a ship touches land it will gradually accumulate damage points until it explodes and sinks. One possible alternative might be to use an aircraft instead of a ship, give it the 3d model of a land structure, make a maximum speed of 0, and have it hover so close to the ground that you can't notice. Somebody already created a mod for parked aircraft several months ago, so I think it is possible.

On a related note, I wouldn't mind seeing targets like trucks, tanks, and trains; maybe they could be built using the same principle.

Well you can park a U-boat on the sea floor without accumalating damage. :hmm:

I don't know how the files might differ from SH4, but you could try opening the land unit in question with S3D and see if you can change a -1 in the zon to some real damage value.

I have done a little bit of work on land-based objects to serve as targets. It is actually quite easy to extract the existing structures from the dat files in the Library folder & use them as a basis for new buildings (like this British radar tower). However, I still don't know how to incorporate them into the game. If we could find a way to make them destructible units it would clearly add whole new level of immersion.

Caveat: I don;t own SH3, just SH4.

I opened a shore battery with S3D. The GUN is just a naval turret that attaches to a node, just like a ship. The base of the bunker has a zon, and an armor level.

Seems like you could add in a new shore batteries that use 3d models from other facilities, and have no guns.

Set the armor low I guess. Note that the file in SH4 is labeled (inside the zon) SH3 Zones Control.

Alternately...in the Terrain directory (whatever the equiv is in SH3) there are location dats for all the port facility groups. Dats. but no zons. What happens if you make a new facility dat with 1 object, say oil tanks. name it oiltanks.dat. Then make a zon for it. Maybe just having a zon makes something damagable.

(BTW, if anyone figures out how to make a land object that you can "lock" in the periscope, let me know, I have a need for one in SH4 )

@iambecomelife:
oh damn how i would love to destroy that radio tower with my 8,8cm... ;-)

@all:
hm i guess it would be an interesting question in which way air/sea units differ from the land-units. when comparing their folders, one thing struck me:

in the .cfg file are basic parameters, right. so in the .cfg of the AA platform (subfolder of the land unit folder) there is:

Quote:
[Unit]
ClassName=CDAAPlatform
UnitType=408
MaxSpeed=0.000000
MinSpeed=0.000000
Length=11.5
Width=13.8
RenownAwarded=10
what strikes me there is that obviously renown is awarded to destroying these. Why would they award renown if it can't basicly be destroyed? it also has a .zon file in which there is values for armor and stuff.

it would be a major breakthrough if we found a way to "just" re-enable damage for ALL those land units ;-) will look for that "kashmir" editor and will experiment with the zon files a bit.

because... i have a dream... (of destructibe land targets)

I can try and give you a breef explanation of what I bellieve
that renown was for...

SHIII was released The same way SHIV recently , is saying
rushed and unfinished, there was a lot of features that were
suposed to be active on the game release that never hapend
cause they launched the game to stores incompleted but
the features are there....
I can give you a example, if you read the SHIII manual
there is a option under radio messages I think that says
that when your Boat is leaving and returning from patrol
you can ask for a escorte shipto lead you out and into the
Harbor, the feature is there but never found a way of making
it work and on the release date of the game simply wasn't finished!

During this years, of modding and atempting moddings, search and
find, change and create, the SHIII community and Modders have
been discovering slowlly this undercoverd features and modding them,

I am preaty sure that if you found that renown points over a
suposed land unit that can't for now be destroyed is just because
they were planing to make that available on the date of SHIII release!

So now you found it,
the question is,

What are you gone do about it?:hmm:
