Sank my first carrier, on my first patrol!

Just installed SH4 on my computer after having it since it was first released (GWX kept me on SH3, might drift back after the final update is released).

I did some training missions so I could get use to the layout, especialy the keybord hot key layout, and then started a campain.

Got orders to partol off Honshu, so I set off for my patrol area. We were getting more and more air contacts the closer I got to Japan. I got tired of diving all the time and let the AA crew have some fun. They knocked off a Mavis, which opened our account.

Soon we had some ship contacts they we hunted after, small merchants were knocked off with the deck gun, medium and large with one or two torpedos, and some deck gun rounds if needed.

I noticed a task force contact, but we were out of position as we were chasing a pair of contacts that turned out to be fishing boats! Sank then out of pure rage at missing a task force.

A little while later, another task force is reported and I'm in a postion to intercept! Task force??? It's an old passanger liner with six destroyer escorts! Stuff that!
Four torpedos later, and the passanger ship is going down in flames! The escort never get a sniff of me!

A convoy is reported nearby, so I head off to intercept it. Two large ships and four smaller ones. Knock of one of the large, damage another (it had water at the guard rails, but it wouldn't sink!) and decided it wasn't worth going after it.

I get new orders to head over to near Formosa, but on the way there I get a report of a new task force heading to Japan. I'm in a perfect postion to attack, but only have four torps left aft. What a Taks force!!! 4 large carriers, two escort carriers, two battleships and a couple of heavy cruisers, not to metion escorts, a troop transport and a tanker! and me with only four torps!

Take aim at the first large carrier and fire a spread of four torps at her. All hit!!! By this time I'm already below the thermal layer and heading out of there!!! My log book records the carrier sunk (19,000 tons of her) and 50,000 tons of other shiping sunk as well!

Got some nice medals and rewards when I got home

congrats on a great first patrol, bookworm. I remember it took me awhile in my first career before I encountered my first flattop.

I'm on my third career and I have yet to see a carrier, though that's probably because I was still learning and every time I went near a task force I had DD's all over me and couldn't get a shot off. I started a new career yesterday and my third objective was to patrol the East China Sea. Surprisingly enough I didn't run into much on the way there and only managed to take out a Huge European Liner before arriving in my patrol area. About one day in I started getting a couple warship contacts from my Sonarman so I head over to check them out and the closer I get the more warship contacts I get, it was crazy. So I pop out the external camera to take a look and it's the hugest task force I've ever seen. Up until this point most reported task forces I've run into have either been a Destroyer (or two) and a Gun Boat or the one huge troop transport (I assume) passenger liner escorted by 3-4 Destroyers. This task force had 4 Battleships (no Yamoto though), 10 or so Cruisers, at least 12 Destroyers and about 4 random merchants thrown in there too. I crept up on it but still got some attention from the Destroyers, I was at 300 feet and running silent though so they had a little trouble finding me.

Popped up with a Battleship in my sights, fired off 4 torpedoes and immediately dove back down to 300 feet and went silent again. All 4 torps hit and over the next couple of hours the battleship capsized, 32,000 tons in my log! I tracked the task force down and again approached quietly, getting some attention from the Destroyers but evading them fairly easily. This time I fired off 4 torpedoes into the lead battleship and dropped to 300 feet and ran silent again, following the task force this time. Over the next few hours the ship started listing to one side and the water even came up to the deck but it never did sink. I was out of torpedoes in the front tubes but still had a few in the back so I popped up to periscope depth once all the Destroyers were well out of range and fired another torpedo into the ailing ship, making sure to aim for a spot I hadn't hit yet. The ship lowered in the water a little but still didn't go down... I gave it another hour and then fired another torpedo into her and she finally gave up the fight and went down, this one was 34,000 tons. My first ever warship kills (other than Destroyers) and they sure were nice. From now on I'll be checking out more task force contacts for sure, I'm definitely looking forward to sinking a Carrier.

Two patrols in a row (1942) I was sent to photo recon Osaka. Each time, while heading back out down the channel between Shikoku and Honshu, I have come across lone carriers (Hiryu and Akagi) and sank both (the Hiryu with my last two fish, one smack under the island - she took awhile to sink, using NSM 3.2).

The problem with probing up towards Osaka in '42 is that there seems to be at least one convoy heading out every 12-24 hours - more ships in there then flies on a dung pile

I've gotten fairly decent at sneaking into a task force, as long as it's either dead in the water (early war, off the coast, allegedly supporting an invasion) or I'm lucky enough to be positioned in front of it. I did have a problem once with with an attack in broad daylight, noon, when an escort happened to catch my 'scope. Still got away, though.

Still haven't ran across a flat-top yet, though. Got a few battleships... they make great targets. Big, deep, and maneuver like a pregnant cow. After a few good hits, each of mine slowed to a stop, and the task force eventually left them behind... they were sitting ducks then. I made sure not to surface until they capsized, though .

A destroyer, on the other hand... now, that takes skill & luck, as far as I'm concerned. I was ecstatic to bag my first last night. He managed to spot me before I could get fully submerged, and was heading straight at me from about 4,500 yards. I had manuevered my bow at him, trying to reduce my cross area, so I had a perfect 0 degree shot at him. When he hit 3,500 yards, I fired off two fish... just in case. I've had too many dud's not to put some extra insurance on it.

First one hit... and immediately he kicked the rudder over, causing the second one to miss. Not that it mattered... ten minutes later, her bow was bouncing off the bottom. Shallow water, so the stern stuck way up in the air.

If she hadn't been heading straight for me, I'd have been hanging out on a limb... shallow water, plenty of air support around, and I can't hit an escort that's zigging/zagging.

I finally sank a BB on my last cruise, but haven't had any luck locating cooperative flattops with Trigger Maru 1.6 and earlier versions in my current career. But it wouldn't be half as much fun if you tagged one every day! Great job you sorry son of a biscuit eater!

What's worse is being in position for attack, with battleships and carriers lined up begging to be hit, and your out of torpedo's!

I like Convoys !! I managed to sink 7 ships and 1 destroyer on one patrols . I sort of avoid task forces . Going for the merchants So we can keep the outpost starving for supplies . Just Having Fun Being a Virtaul Sub Skipper

Actually that is more or less staying within the doctrine of the time.

Two careers now, (first in plain vanilla, second in TM 1.6+) I've never seen a CV let alone a BB.

Plenty of DDs a couple cruisers and merchants out the ying yang.

My current mission has me headed into a Jap port for a photo recon. Hope I get some luck from that.
