Punch the "X" key ,Hold Lt.mouse on it,& drag it off the screen. I will also recommend caution using TC in contact situation.

I just L-click and drag it off the top of my screen with enough sticking out to grab it when I need it.

Planes patrol on a radial search pattern from a source point (base or carrier) like spokes on a wheel. A plane will fly straight out to the limit of its patrol range, turn around and come back on another radial. Multiple planes or groups might be sent out on more than one radial at a time. Each flight, the plane(s) will cover two radials, one out and another coming back.

If you have shown yourself or sunk ships in a patrol area, you will see more planes. This is a clue you should leave the area. Early in the war, it's an opportunity to put an expert gunner in the flack gun and rack up a grand score. The planes might look like they are following you, but if you have stayed hidden, it's just a random feature of the patrol tactic the next radial might be in the direction closer to you on the next pass. A plane which has found you will call more planes right to your location. Again, they will fly radials searching for you.

I like the stop watch. It reminds me I'm using compression and taking more of a risk in enemy areas. It's also easier to see than the tini numbers partially obscured by the map graphics down in the corner.

Submarine games are not for people who are easily bored between battles. If you are tired of the planes, move to another patrol area.
