Default Never saw this happen before!!

Hi All,

I was shadowing a merchant ship at night for a while..did measurements. I thought I was on track.

Was on the surface, took a look around and there was the merchant ship right off the port bow. It was just sitting there so I loaded up my deck gun and blasted severel holes in the water line. I thought "this is going to be easy" . The merchant did not fire back a shot, so I kept at it.

To my surprise, the merchant started to move .....in MY direction, full steam.

I could not get away in time, and that dang merchant rammed the hell out of me.

I was so shocked, had never experienced this an any previous SH sims.

I manages to turn away and fired 2 torps from the aft and sunk her.

I could not believe it..tried to take a snap shot and forgot the key combo.

I've had merchants make the attempt to ram a couple times.

yeah something like this happend to me today...

It was during the campaign I encountered a lone Kasigisan merchant (japanese)..

It was unarmed cause it was Jan 1942 and I my deck gun was stern mounted I had no bow mounted weapons and was out of torpedos...

I saw him initially at 9k range and his angle was about 10 degree off, then when he saw me he headed straight for me... I wasn't shooting him, he wasn't trying to evade, no weaving etc.

I was doing 20 knts and on collision course but I turned away and then my gun crews opened up and sank him..

The End..

But it was a nice change..

Questions.. were you out of torpedos?

Hello all, long time lurker, first post.

I have had them attempt to ram me a couple of times, and thought it was a little silly, until I read "Take Her Deep!" by Admiral I.J. Galatin about his experiences as a sub skipper during WW2. In one of his detailed accounts of his encounters with enemy ships, he describes a wounded Japanese merchant vessel attempting to ram his ship and periscope, apparently on purpose. So I guess it's historically possible. There are much more knowledgable history buffs on here that can probably weigh in on this.

I highly recommend the book, btw.

I'd think getting rammed by a merchant would be lethal to a sub.

You're under sub attack, and more likely than not you're pobably going to cop a torpedo up the jacksie at some ponit in the near future; What have you really got to lose by going the ram?

In SH I merchands tried to ram you to and convois often anchored in a bay or near land (shallow wathers) for the night under protection of 1 or 2 patroning DD's. Didn't experianced that so far in SH IV. What did they do in those day's in reality ?:hmm:

Well at the least not very healthy.

Unfortunatly it seems to be modeled the opposite in the game. If you get run over by a DD you might lose your scope or gun. The DD on the other hand explodes in a ball of flame :hmm:

Ive been rammed before by accident and on purpose. Ive never seen a sleeping merchant suddenly drop into flank and turn towards me though.
