You still get retired after 5 or 6 patrols (possibly a little longer if you've been doing well) so that's a feature, but as for the getting retired along with your boat I'm not sure, it's not mentioned in the official patch readme anywhere.

Tips to not get retired

Basically, it comes down to this:

1) achieve your objectives (so, go to the patrol area, land that spy and take those pictures).

2) sink tonnage!

It was the twelfth war patrol of the Barb, the fifth under Commander Fluckey. He should have turned command over to another skipper after four patrols, but had managed to strike a deal with Admiral Lockwood to make one more trip with the men he cared for like a father, should his fourth patrol be successful. Of course, no one suspected when he had struck that deal prior to his fourth and what should have been his final war patrol on the Barb, that Commander Fluckey's success would be so great he would be awarded the Medal of Honor.

Now that I have posted the excerpt of a real life story Ill tell you how to get more missions per patrol.

Dont go home. Refit at a tender, call in a mission report and recieve new orders. You can do this evidently forever but... the loading times become long. I typically do 5 or 6 missions per patrol. My current carrier has around 20 or so missions in their log after their 3rd patrol.

But is it possible to actually go through the entire war without getting retired?(other than just staying out on patrol the whole time.)

(woot! post #500!)

I don't know about the whole war (as that would be unrealistic) but I can tell you that I am on my 8th patrol, 3rd boat, and things are going fine.

Again... complete your objectives. renown is not enough to keep your career active.

"...Dont go home. Refit at a tender, call in a mission report and recieve new orders. You can do this evidently forever but... the loading times become long..."

There is another drawback to not going back to home port. You don't benefit from crew and boat upgrades which make each patrol afterwards a little more successful. Remember, the enemy is upgrading making your job harder. You need to do the same. Also, the crew gets tired. Their stamina for lengthy engagements drop rapidly. A port call with some new crew members and a little rest gives the game a boost. Batteries last longer, engines are more efficient, crew reaction times and targeting improve.

There's nothing really bad about starting a new campaign although I can see for some, making it to the end of the entire war with the same crew has an appeal.

A compromise would be to do refits to stretch out a patrol as long as the boat and the crew are doing well. This would allow you to play out the entire war in 3-4 patrols and possibly not get retired. Also, mission assingments might send you to a jiucy area you would like to work for a while, but neglecting home port completely will not let you take advantage of the benefits.

You and the crew are a partnership in this game. Give 'em a break and they'll spot planes and ships better. The same holds true for forcing them to slug out a storm on the surface (which is easy to do at 1000x.) then expect them to easily take out an escorted convoy the next day.

well its finally happened to me as well . . . my original class (salmon) got retired, and my career along with it, even though on the last patrol I completed my objectives and sank over 200K of tankers and merchants.

Thought I would share.
Well time to download patch 1.3

1.3 fixes at least one bug related to early retirement - the Balao class bug.

Basically what happened before was that you may be pushed first in line to receive a Balao before it became available to the force. And then the game thought its no longer available to the force, and retired it.

No more with 1.3!
