Default Unable to turn a air search RADAR on an S-18

Has anyone else had this problem? I installed the upgrade, but I'm screwed because I can't use it.

You can't turn it on or off, it's always on. To make it even better: there's no station for the SD radar, so you've got to rely on your invisible operator.

This is maybe a stupid question (left Pearl for my first patrol just few days ago so not much experience yet...) but:

What happens if you take your (SJ) radar operator off duty?
SD will be still on or...?

I'm having the same thing with the Purpoise class, I grabbed the air search radar but realised I can't turn it on/off, So I guess that it's always on? Haven't spotted any planes yet.

The ON/OFF button is there but un-clickable.

It seems to me, in 1.2. Ducimus with Trigger Maru mod was working around the subject. If Ducimus can do it again in 1.3. I'll be happy.

Which, at that time, we were all misinformed about how SD radar works in the game. It's not part of the mannable radar station we have. Look at the Subsystems tab when on patrol - you'll see the SD radar set is in the control room, not the conning tower. So, there is no workaround justified nor necessitated for this "to work right."

Confused....

If this is the case, what is the A scope doing there right next to the PPI? SJ didn't use both at the same time, did it? If so, why?

Are we sure this isn't just another workaround like the magnetic/impact switch on the torpedo panel? Maybe they couldn't get it working right in the time alotted so they hard coded a half assed compromise.

The idea of sailing around all the time with a "searchlight" blaring out your location to anyone with a directional antenna and a ham radio just seems ludicrous.

And to compund matters we have the interesting option presented to us to install a piece of equipment while in port that might not work for several months or a year.

Somethin ain't right here.

Yes, the SJ radar did use the A-Scope. The A-Scope gives range readouts, the SJ, bearings. Don't believe me?:

Actually, that's the SJ - Surface search radar. The SJ first appeared with an A-scope type display and later - through the SJ-a/SJ-1 version, gained the PPI type screen.

The SD - aircraft search radar - also had an A-scope, and was non-directional. We don't model that one as mannable station.

Yes, I know the early SJ used an A scope. The question is, did it require both the A scope and the PPI at the same time? If so why? PPI clearly provides range and bearing. So if you've got that what's the A scope for?

It's simple: the devs simply used one interior model for each boat, regardless of the year or technology installed. SH3 is similiar in this regard - you'll see knobs in the control room and conning tower for the pattern running torpedoes long before they were historically availalbe.

I took 'm both (radar and sonar operator) to the damage control party. I was sick of the constant radar reports in friendly waters. Didn't help a thing. They kept reporting. As a result I'd sail without the airwarning radar, only the surfacewarning radar was on my boat. I could switch that thing off. Trade off was, planes could get fairly close before they were detected. Crash diving a lot......

it works as it should it detects the planes and only planes very good.

And there is no for extra station for SD radar. Since it was not directional. Real SD Radar was just a bulb. It was not giving you the direction nor the range. When it lightened up you know there is something in the air. You dont know the bearing or how far it is.

So basicly, if you hear radar contact. Dive.

Well, OK then. If that's the case...

A bulb, eh? Really? <g>

I guess all we need then is for some smart modder to figure out a way to turn it on and off at will.

Perfecto!
