You may have missed the first half of the countdown on Channel 4 last night: http://www.channel4.com/film/newsfea...lms/index.html
The second half screens this Saturday 7th July on Channel 4 at 7pm counting down the final top 50. Program it on your Sky box if you haven't already done so. ![]() I expect Das Boot to be right up there along with Apocalypse Now and Saving Private Ryan. ![]()

As expected. It was bound to spark some debate. Didn't take long.

And SPR #1?
The plot is moronic. It's beyond moronic. It's sub-moronic. ![]()

While Saving Private Ryan was a good movie.. it evolved into the realm of fantasy or at least unbelievability.
I saw that Full Metal Jacket ranked #5. I think it should've been #1 just because it's down in the dirt with the grunts... no special mission... no special anything. Just doin' their job.

Jeez - who came up with that list?
Half of them I wouldn't even classify as war movies, and a good proportion of them are just the opposite, i.e. anti-war movies, which while it's a cool genre in itself, should not be populatiing a list of 'war movies'. Admittedly there are a few films which transcend the boundary (i.e Das Boot, which laughably isn't in the Top Ten of that list for some reason), but not many. And someone needs to point out to the people that voted on this, that just because a movie is set in wartime, it does not make it a 'war movie', it makes a it 'a movie set in wartime', which is a completely different thing. No wonder Channel 4 is a big pile of arse if the producers of this list can't even determine that fairly basic distinction. Cross of Iron at 37? What were they thinking? A matter of Life and Death and Casablanca are great films, but they sure as hell aint War Movies. Funniest one on the list has got to be The English Patient? WTF? that's a chick flick, not a War Movie, and not even a very good chick flick at that. What a preposterous list. ![]()

The problem I have with Full Metal Jacket is that Kubrick insisted on directing the Vietnam location scenes in London of all places on the docklands, thinking that ramming a few Palm trees in the ground would make it look like a convincing version of the Tet Offensive. Offensive it certainly was, but convincing it was not!
I think Hamburger Hill is a much better attempt at that kind of movie and apart from the chopper pilots wearing (bullet magnet) white bonedomes on the helicopter assault, Hamburger Hill is pretty convincing. ![]()

Well, I tend to overreact, mainly because I blew chunks when they got to the part in boot camp where the fat kid kills R. Lee Ermey. I had a hard time enjoying any of it after that.
