He certainly lived an amazing life.

I don't think the thread title is quite right! Eugene Fluckey was more than just an admiral to most submarine fans.

An amazing life. We haven't lost a submarine ace of this scale since Erich Topp a year and a half ago, but one just wonders how long those that are still with us will be around every time there's news like this

Another great one gone -- RIP. And RIP to the thousands of WWII vets leaving us every day. Thank you for your service.

Wasn't he reported dead a year ago?

Still a great man and a great sailor.

At 93 there is nothing to grieve about. I'd think it was cause to celebrate ones life.

Noon 7th of August 1945:

"The officers and Chief Saunders lined up, caps and ties on, appearing more polished than I had seen them since we left Pearl a year ago. Solemnly, I read my orders. Pat read his. We saluted as he said, "I relieve you sir." We shook hands and Pat gave his first order. "Splice the main brace!" "

"Thunder Below" Eugene B. Fluckey.

RIP Admiral.

My thoughts exactly. The Barb is one of my favorite boats, and he was the commander.

I am very saddened by the loss. It just so happens that I am reading his book "Thunder Below!" right now. This guy sure was a hero.
