Not a bad idea.
I'm pretty sure this sort of thing happened in RL. But hey its a game (shrug) and the "feature" isnt in the game. In real life there was no save games :p |

Funny enough, I had somewhat of a rescue recently.
I was on my 5th or so patrol, and it was around August of '42. I was returning from a successful infiltration off Hokkaido when I ran into a massive IJN taskforce comprising of a Yamato, Three Fusos, two carriers, some heavy cruisers, and the requisite DDs. Counting my lucky stars, I set up for my shot and let loose as many fish as I could fire and reload before things went to hell (it was aorund 8 fish, give or take). Anyways, I had successfully downed two Fusos and a heavy cruiser, when the DDs finally caught up to me. About 2 hours later, they left, leaving me with flooding and the like, though by that time I had made it the few km to shallower waters (around 200m). Then things went to **** on my sub. Flooding increased, and within minutes I was dead. To my surprise, though, I was told after my death screen that I should have faced a court-martial for losing the boat, and that I was lucky to stay in the service and get a new boat. I accepted, and was ready to go on my next patrol. Now that I think about it...maybe my SH4 Captain is Jesus... |

In r/l HQ would occasionally order a sub to meet up with a damaged sub to send over spare parts.(primarily engine and electronic parts),but rescuing an entire crew was only done once as far as I can recall. When the Darter ran aground I believe the Dace and possibly another sub rescued the crew...which was ballsy since it happened during the Battle for Leyte Gulf not too long after the Darter and Dace had smacked down 2 Heavy Cruisers and damaged another one. The Japanese weren't all that far away at the time.

Silent Service 2 had that for when you ran out of petrol.

There should definetely be some alternative for when you're out of gas, or when your rudders or engines are broken. Having to quit the game is just too silly.

You should be able to request rescue and end mission but with a serious hit to renown.

Wasn't there a post about using battery power to return home? I remember someone saying the game has it that all you need to do is surface to recharge batteries. You don't have to be moving with your diesels to charge them. If that's the case you can get home without fuel. It would take awhile and is unrealistic but you could at least get back to start another patrol. That wouldn't help though if your engines are broken. I've never run out of fuel yet. I've always made it home except for being sunk. I usually run out of torpedos before fuel.

The cruiser was easy...it went down in one shot. Hit right under a turret, so I'm guessing the ship's ammo was to blame. The two Fusos went down pretty much the same way. Both took one hit aft, and started to roll. One took another shot aimed right to the side of a turret to sink, the other took two more. The Yamato ate the other three fish I sent, with no signs of major or crippling damage. I'll find her weakness, though. I did with all the ships in GWX, and I'm sure I can do it again here. |

On a historical note the Yamato took 12 mk14's and around two dozen 1,000 bombs before she finaly rolled on her side. Those are just the ones that hit.
Even then she still did not "sink" untill her powder magazine lit off literally splitting her in half. All this "Cruiser went down with one fish" ... just remember its just a game. |

Yeah, a feature like this would be cool but they also retire you as well!!!! Make you think twice before doing something nuts with a 55 million dollar sub!

However, every ship has her weakness. Let us not forget the HMS Hood, which went down because of a single salvo that happened to hit her ammo bunker. Let us not forget the RMS Lusitania, who sunk because of a single torpedo. I'm just saying, game or no, every ship has a weakness. It's just that since this is a game, as was GWX, it's much much easier to exploit these weaknesses. As for the Yamato, she has her weakness, too. If I recall correctly, the Yamato's weakness was that her armoring did not extend fully to her bow or stern. |
