Default The water in SH4

Do you guys like the water in Sh4? Often it has the look of liquid metal from many different perspectives, a sort of quicksilver quality to it. Of course, we have the transparency effect; that's pretty cool.

But I see a lot of images posted on the forum here and the water looks more like mercury than water. What do you guys think?

To me the water is a step up from SH3, transparency, light shafts, even the murkiness of it, like the algae effect ( mod to make it more subtle ) as well.

They have the storm water down as well, as far as how it should look, but the effect needs a little work , not as good as GWX water in storms, yet anyway.

Anyway, just my thoughts.

I don't really mean to imply I don't like it or don't think there's a LOT of improvement over the water in SH3. It's just that often it appears more metallic....a result of the filter maybe? Dunno.

My biggest issue with it thus far is the storm water, as mentioned just does not look right in its present state.

As far as color IB, I am ok with how it looks. The grainy effect mod ( removal ) is a nice touch as well. Things are more sharper as a result.

Personally I like the water and graphics in general of SH3 better than SH4...yes there are all the fancy enhancements in SH4, but the graphics in SH3 seemed to present a fairly believable and consistent world, if not photo-genic...i am of course speaking of the GWX enhanced graphics more than stock.

As far as SH4 water goes...its too blue if that makes sense. Is that how blue the pacific ocean is? Light blue? seems too colorful to me...I'm in the middle of nowhere in the ocean..and the water looks like shallow beach water to me.

Main issue about SH4 water is the neat square shaped rear wake behind subs which seems artificial. It's just too straight.

Apart from that sea states are very attractive.

Its a tough one, the water does indeed have a "liquid silver" look to it. I also find the transpanrency effect seems to lie on top of the reflection effect yet it should be the other way round.

It also lacks the "choppyness" that existed in SH3, I know its the pacific but I don't always feel i'm in the middle of a sea which is important for immersion.

All in, SH3 is a more "immersive" experience than SHIV.....which is a shame considering what can be done with modern graphix cards (i've a GTS 8800).

Oh, and the rain is crap!

I think the SH4 water is a significant improvement over SH3.

SH3 water is even more like quicksilver. Either way, they didn't get it quite right with either game.

The water is way too reflective and mirror like in SH3.

SH4 water is clearly better because it is bluer, we have better ship wakes, transparency, better contrast and a much nicer surface texture effect that looks much more like real ocean.

Maybe people can think SH3 water looks better, but no way does it look more realistic. There is no way SH4 water is too blue, in fact it could be bluer, at least on sunny days, and less so on grey days.

Yes, SH4 storm water is really bad. That's where SH3 has got it over SH4. Like most things, SH3 has got it over SH4 where it counts at the moment.

This is an interesting thread.

For me, immersion is key to enjoying a game. The goal of the graphic environment then is to aid immersion. And this is what is interesting, SH4 has a better sea than SH3...I agree....but SH3's sea immerses me more than SH4's. So I suppose its not just about sea texture, or transparency, or reflectivity, or sea state....its the result of all these things put together.

So for me, SH3 produces a better result, and hence imersion, even if some components of that result are better in SH4.

Am i making sense

Yes, and I agree. I dont know if credit goes strictly to the Mods for the GreyWolves supermod improvements or not, but SH3's overall water experience is much better than SH4's in my opinion. After getting used to seeing the spectacular water in SH3 Greywolves, the water in SH4 was the first thing I was dissapointed in. Its not 'bad' but its also not an 'overall' improvement over SH3, once again, in my opinion only.
