Default [REQ] - Crew Rotation

Yeah, it bothers me a bit to make a request like this (although not enough to prevent my asking), but....

I was reading a thread over in that other forum over there and had a thought. When the smoke finally cleared (damn, I hate when that happens), here's what I could remember....

Assuming there's no way to mod this directly into the game itself, here's an idea for a utility or something.

At the end of every patrol, exit the game, click an icon on your desktop, and this "utility" would delete at random from your last save game file (after making a backup of course) every third or fourth man from each compartment on your boat. Absent an easy way to do this by compartment, just deleting every third or fourth man from the crew roster should still work.

And that's it! Simple yes? (...from the guy who can't code his way out of a paper bag)

Then...

At the start of your next patrol you would back fill with raw talent from the repple depple

-or-

You could use renown to replace major talent drains in any compartment as needed (remember the auto-deleting process would be random)

-and-

You would have more care (and reason for care) in handing out promotions and medals to those left behind.

Now if only I knew how to code...

I'm not entirely familiar with SH4's save game system, but if it's simply editing of a text file that's required, it shouldn't be too much of a hassle. My initial reaction is that I want to implement additional features "simulating" the bureaucratic musical chairs the post-patrol reshuffling of personnel could mean. Many didn't want to leave their boat for new construction (especially if it was successful boat), so quite a few found a way to get back aboard again. Stuff like that. This could be a fun project if done right. If I know myself as well as I think, someone else will finish a project like this before I even get a chance to think it through properly.

Oh, and it would be extremely cool if you could qualify your officers for command and as a result loose them to new construction. This would of course also have to be managed by a separate application, but it should be manageable.

In SH3, SH Commander did this , elite _ hunter_3 was working on this, but stopped due to some personal stuff, not sure of the present status:hmm:

Yep, you're right. Especially in the early months of the war, crew rosters did not change much from one patrol to the next, due to the fact that crewmen wanted to stay on a successful submarine, and commanders naturally wanted to keep experienced crew on board. I think a good solution for such a third-party program would have it eliminate up to 1/3 of the crew after each patrol. :hmm:

I've heard about SH3 Commander but never used it. I like the idea though and would very much like to have a similar application for SH4, and I'd really like to give it a try, but I have a bad habit of never finishing my hobby programming project. For some reason I always move on to another idea before the last one is done. Perhaps we can get a small group of 2 - 3 guys to work on this together to maximize the probability of seeing it through? Any other C#-programmers out there who'd like to give it a try?

Sounds like a good idea. I really like the concept beind an application like this. If done right it could add tons of immersion to the game.

SH3 Commander is a great application, improves a number of different aspects of the game big-time, hopefully something similar will be completed for SH4.
