Default The lonely war...

I'm on my 7th patrol. Have yet to see any other allied units involved in the war effort. I've seen a friendly task forces, well blue squares, moving about but never engaged. Do they? I report convoys etc. but have never seen a response. Have I been unlucky? its rare? or never happens?
Thanks in advance....Happy Memorial Day to my fellow yanks...

It does no good to "report task forces" except under the following conditions and the results of doing so are limited:

1) Surfaced or deck awash (22 feet at the keel with diesels running)
Note: These are conditions for the radio to operate. Of course you have to have able crew in the con.
2) Be within 4500 yards of LOCKED target ship in convoy
3) Locked Target Ship cannot be escort

Results:
You will be asked to attack or abandon the convoy. If you are out of torpedoes, you will be given permission to return to base.

Other friendlies in the game will never attack a contact as a result of your report.

Is this confirmed?

I know in discussing Kakemann's Better Escort's mod, there is lines in a cfg file that effect the percentage of possiblity of allied attack on a reported target. It's definately written into the cfg. Is the game just not utilizing it? Is it another 'unfinished' aspect of the game?

From the stock Airstirkes.cfg;

Default Air Strike Probability=10
Enemy Air Strike Probability Increase on Radio Messages Sent=30
Friendly Air Strike Probability Increase on Contact Report Sent=70

I was wondering about this, too. I think I read in another thread where someone said they'd reported an convoy/taskforce and were heading away when suddenly the ships started exploding seemingly by themselves. Afterwards, they said they actually got credit for the kills. Maybe that was the air strike?

I've only managed to 'report' a task force once so far, it was group of 6 small passenger carriers escorted by three heavy cruisers and five destroyers. I surfaced just enough to make the report and luckily wasn't spotted. A short time later COMSUBPAC radioed back saying the transports might be carrying reinforcements for nearby garrison and that I should attack them as a 'priority target'. It added a new objective for me to take out a transport -- I managed to take one out along with one of the heavy cruisers & that completed the objective.

Has anyone else ever seen anything interesting/useful come of reporting task forces? I'd be particularly interested if anyone's actually seen the 'air strike' happen, and can confirm getting credit for the kills?

Can't see why this would not happen as per , it was a feature in SH3, a rare one but it happened.

I had a similar incident aboard the USS Salmon. I just passed it going to drop of supplies to the South South West of Davao . . . and then came upon her backside. The task force was moving very slowly, possibly only 4 knots . . . with the same screen you talked about. I was able to get three before diving, and getting hunted relentlessly by the DD screen . . . thankfully I had saved the game prior to making my run, otherwise I would have remained with Davy Jones.

But that was before patch 1.2 . . . so the destroyers were more aggressive back then.
