Hi All,
I am wondering what it is for? It has smaller ocular magnitude... The only purpose I came up with is that after destruction of the attack scope we (the Germans during WWII) can/could use a secondary device. However, whay weren't the U-boots given two IDENTICAL X8 (X10 in GWX) SCOPES!? The second thing is an idea. When at periscope depth, with observation periscope extended and with at least one officer (prefferably the Watch Officer) in the Control Room the command (normaly available only on the surface) "NEAREST VISUAL TARGET" be available? Could THIS be modded? What do You say? |

from my reading i've found the observation or "sky" periscope had a much larger head lense than the attack periscope - it was for navigation purposes and for actually viewing the sky - i'm assuming for weather reporting.

Well, thats what I'm saying! Let's makethe obs. scope work under the water! In my opinion the Watch officer could be using it just as well as the Captain so the command "Nearest Visual Contact" should be available...

I forgot.
Another thing to consider is to have the OBS scope up when snorkeling at TC. It will give you the much needed warning if you are about to be attacked by aircraft. ![]()

The attack periscope has a blind spot i.e. immediately above the u-boat. The observation scope largly covers this blind spot and is therefore better at spotting approaching aircraft. I gathered this information from a book I am reading at the moment 'U333 The Story of a U-boat Ace' by Peter Cremer.

First off, the attack periscope wasn't x8, it was x1.5 and x6, while the observation 'scope was x1 and x4. The purpose was to observe, or look for targets while submerged, which is why it's in the control room for easy access. The smaller resolution gave it a wider field of view, and the larger head and lens let in more light, which made it much better at night.

Also useful if you are playing SHCMR with malfunctions enabled, being too lazy to stress test your boat just out of port, and then find your attack scope all blurry when you get to DH99

:hmm: Strikes me that the 'glass' on both those scopes looks really crap.
